The debate over the definition of marriage has just begun. Several states have made marriage between two men or two women legal. That a gay or lesbian couple in a committed relationship should have the same legal protections as a heterosexual couple is an argument that makes sense to many Americans. What American society has to grapple with is that only a heterosexual couple can procreate.
It is this unique ability of a man impregnating a woman and of a woman giving birth to a child that was the reason for the legal sanctioning of marriage in the first place. Someone had to be held responsible for the children that resulted from sex.
A redefinition of marriage must also result in a redefinition of the family.
