Do you have a great idea for a short story or piece of flash fiction but you don’t know how many characters the story needs? The smart money always, always goes on as few characters as possible.
The simple reason this is true for most writers is that in writing, the fewer moving parts the less that can go wrong. If you can get away with two characters, do it. It will give you every character you need: a protagonist and an antagonist.
