Two problems that most writers face are when to write and where to write. One depends on time and the other depends on place. Of the two, probably place is the more important one. And having a place to write is very important.

Your Story Must Have A Setup, Buildup & A Payoff
July 5, 2009 — pittsburghflashfictiongazetteThat’s all a short story is: a setup, a buildup and a payoff. Or a beginning, a middle and an end. Either way it’s the same thing. And if you’re writing short stories, flash fiction, micro fiction, sudden fiction, mini fiction or the very short story all these forms of fiction have got to have this form of the setup, the buildup and the payoff.
This is not something a bunch of academics came up with a couple of hundred years ago. This form is found in all short fiction since nearly the birth of modern writing which started some 5,000 years ago in the Middle East.
Keep the setup of your story as short as possible. The meat of the story is in the buildup. Then hit the reader with a short, sweet payoff.
