The Gazette believes it has found its niche on the Internet as a blog of writing, literature and erotica.  As editor and publisher of the Gazette, I hope to continue this evolution and to make the Gazette a one stop site for readers and writers seeking literary entertainment and insightful articles full of practical tips and advice on the craft of writing.

You will find great flash fiction and great articles in the sidebar on the right.

A New Story About Marriage, Sex, Nudity And Love

A new story is up at the Gazette.

What do young married people talk about in the bedroom?  What happens when a young husband bumps into an old girlfriend and the girlfriend is hot?  How will the young wife react?

Real life is complicated.  Life in flash fiction can be complicated, too.  There is no trick to writing the very short story.  There is no mystery to writing intimate dialogue.  It is simply a part of the writer’s education.

Here is Nude Conversation.

Writing A Story With An Unhappy Ending

We all know real life stories that end badly.  Life is like that.  In fiction, a story can have an unhappy ending, too.  But if the writer doesn’t want the reader to feel that reading the story has been a complete waste of time some good must come out of the unhappy ending no matter how slim the chances for future happiness are.

If the protagonist of our story must died, his or her death had better serve the greater good.  And, the protagonist must realize that his or her death will serve the greater good.  This is the only way the protagonist will be able to accept self-annihilation.  The protagonist must be “aware” of his or her situation.

There can be all sorts of variations on the unhappy ending.  The unhappy story does not need to end in death.  It can be about the end of a love affair.  Just make sure the end of the love affair teaches your protagonist a lesson the protagonist will never forget.  This the reader can happily accept.

Total futility, the reader cannot accept.  Keep writing stories of total futility and finding an audience will be very difficult.

Short Stories In The Mode Of The Sun Also Rises

The Sun Also Rises still stands up to a lazy summer time of reading: the characters and the landscape, the dialogue and the simmering sexuality.  It was Hemingway’s breakout novel, a book that evoked the after war period of the 1920s.  If books can capture a time period, then so can short stories.

Meet the students, wives, husbands, lovers, bloggers, Vietnam War veterans and writers of “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read” in the sidebar on the right.

The Importance Of Telling Stories

Be proud that you are a fiction writer no matter what your level of ability.  Fiction has been with human kind from before written language.  Stories about home and clan and tribe were passed down orally from one generation to another.

There is a need in human beings to tell stories.  Stories strengthen a community’s sense of unity and gives a sense of belonging to the individual.

You will find stories of community in the Gazette in the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.

You will find articles on writing just below it.

Stories reveal the inner workings of life.

Leave Some Things To The Reader’s Imagination

When a writer leaves some things in a story to the reader’s imagination, that writer is inviting the reader to share in the creation of the work.  A writer who tries to put every single detail about a story in the story shuts out what the reader brings to the story.  The reader is not a baby to be spoon fed by the writer.

Writing fiction and creative writing in general takes two: the reader and the writer.  The writer only needs to put in a story the significant details.  If these details are the right significant details the reader will fill in the rest…

Dialogue Can Save Your Short Story

Dialogue is the sound track of a short story.  A writer can put honking car horns and thunder in a story, but readers want to hear the people in the story talk.  It is through action that characters reveal themselves and dialogue is action

This is why dialogue must reveal…

It’s a lovely summer day for blogging in Pittsburgh.  And it’s another lovely day for summer reading fun.  To find excellent examples of characters revealing themselves through dialogue in short creative writing about male-female relationships, friendship, love, sex and marriage check out the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.
