A Blog About Writing, Fiction & Sex

The Gazette has evolved into a blog about writing, fiction and sex.  It seems to be a good thing.  There are certainly a lot of articles about writing.  There’s a lot of fiction on the Gazette.  And there are articles and stories about sex.

Most of the stories about sex are under the tab “Sexy Flash Fiction” at the top of the page.

There are other subjects, too, covered by the Gazette.  For these a reader will just have to look around.

Fiction Submissions Wanted

The Gazette has a Category called Guest Writers.  This is an opportunity for aspiring new writers to have their work showcased in one of the web’s best flash fiction publications.  Only serious writers should submit.  Please read and follow the submission guidelines…

Life in Pittsburgh and life in these United States is captured in the “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read” in the sidebar on the right.

It’s Rigatoni For Supper Today

After a full day of blogging and nothing to eat it’s time (4:30 p.m.) for supper.  I love crock pot cooking but not on this lovely, summer’s day in Pittsburgh.

I did some shopping today and picked up a box of rigatoni.  I cooked my sauce yesterday.  It’s been sitting overnight in the refrigerator.  It should be ready.  I think it’s true that the sauce taste better the next day.  In the sauce is plenty of ground beef, plenty of chunky pieces of green pepper, small diced pieces of fresh garlic and a can of spaghetti sauce.

Excuse me.  It’s time to boil the water for the rigatoni.

Why don’t you read some of the stories in the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.  I’m sure a random scan will turn up something you can click on.

This Baby Boomer Finally Has His Dream Job

Yes, I served in Vietnam, grew up in the counter culture listening to The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Who,  The Animals, The Kinks, The Zombies, Steppenwolf, Hendrix and Janis Joplin.  I drank too much beer, participated happily in the sexual revolution and was a professional student.  I worked a lot of jobs.  Finally, I got my MFA in fiction writing from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006.  I recently took early Social Security.

And now at the age of 62 I have the perfect job.  I’m the editor and publisher of this online publication.

The Impact Of Photography On Fiction

Image is emotion.  Image is action.  Image is thought.

What if a writer could use words to paint a picture that told a story?  Of all the sense perceptions that people have it is the sense of sight that we are probably most dependent upon.  If a writer could use words that appealed to our sense of sight the story would come alive on the page in front of the reader’s eyes.  The images of the story would play out like a movie projected on the screen in the reader’s mind.

You will find such stories in the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”…

Here’s a shout-out to the students of the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Point Park University, Robert Morris University, Carlow University, Chatham University, Triangle Tech, Everest Institute, Kaplan Career Institute, Sanford Brown Institute, ITT Tech, Strayer University, Penn State University and West Virgina University.

A Free Education For Student Writers

If you are a student writer, you may be spending a lot of money learning to write.  A formal education and a degree in writing can be a good thing, no doubt about it.  I have an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Pittsburgh.

One of the things one of my professors allowed me to do was an “Independent Study.”  This was a course I put together myself, with the approval of my professor, that I got credit for.  Of course the Independent Study course was included in my tuition.

But every writer does a lot of self-teaching, too; and to help with your own self-teaching, you will find dozens of great writing tips and advice in the sidebar on the right under “More Flash Articles”.  These articles have insights about writing that you will be able to use whether you write flash fiction, short stories or novels.

And it won’t cost you a penny.

Short Stories Are Also American Culture & Entertainment

Do most Americans think of micro fiction, mini fiction, nano fiction, sudden fiction, postcard fiction and very short stories as culture and entertainment.  I don’t know.  Creative writing is a part of the culture of the United States and most people would consider some creative writing as entertainment.

There is no doubt that movies are culture and entertainment.  The new flash fiction is like film on the page.  In the side bar on the right you will find “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.  The Gazette believes these stories are part of American culture and entertainment.  Judge for yourself.

22 Great American Short Stories

Enjoy the hot summer days with a beer or a Pepsi or a Coca-Cola and a pizza with your favorite toppings and some great American short stories.  Sun bathe in the park as you download stories about love and lust, boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives and stories about all the pain and happiness of life.

You will find these stories here at the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.  Just go to the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.  Do a random scan and click on what you like.  Enjoy the summer.

Here Are Some Useful Tips On Writing Dialogue

There is nothing like believable dialogue to bring your blog post or your short story alive.  Dialogue not only gives characters life but it gives creative writing itself life, whether the writing is flash fiction or blogging, non-fiction or books of novel length.  Plays are written as stage directions and dialogue.  Get the dialogue right and you’re well on your way to getting the story right.

You will find plenty of dialogue and life in the stories in the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.  You can get an idea about how the dialogue in these stories was written in the article The Five Elements of Dialogue in Flash Fiction.  Remember, the tips in the article work for dialogue in any length of fiction.

This Is How To Make Your Short Story Sing

Ever read a short story that echoes in your mind, a short story that stays with you after the story is over?  Every writer would like to write a story like that.  Every reader would like to read one like that, too.  Writing a story like that ain’t easy.  Adding Depth to Your Short Story will help you do it…

Days like today in Pittsburgh were made for walking in the park and blogging.  It’s 10:00 a.m. and a beautiful, sunny day.  It’s also a great day to kick back and to enjoy some of the flash fiction on the Gazette.  Flash Fiction: Lesbian Lust is a reader’s favorite.  You’ll find lots more great stories in the sidebar on the right.  You’ll also find more great articles about the craft of writing in the sidebar on the right, too…

As the Congress grapples with universal health coverage for all Americans, the mainstream media did not even cover the recent march of 10,000 people on Washington, DC in support of health coverage reform.  I found out about the march from local, small media outlets…

Without sex there is no life.  You will find plenty of sex when you click on the tab “Sexy Flash Fiction” at the top of the page.  Who says you can’t have literature and erotica in the same short story?
