News: Will Oil Spill Hit East Coast?

BP has finally had some success as the petroleum giant struggles to cap the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  It has recently inserted a pipe in the well head that is one mile below the ocean surface.  In can now siphon off oil and deposit it in a tanker floating 5,000 feet overhead.

However, the one mile pipe siphons off only 20% of the oil gushing into the ocean, leaving more than 200,000 gallons a day to pollute the waters off Louisiana.

Scientists are warning that large plumes of oil 10 miles long may have already moved into two loop currents.  One loop current will take the oil to the coast of Texas and the other loop current will take the oil to the Florida Keys.  Once the oil hits the Florida Keys it will only be a matter of time before it rounds the tip of Florida and begins floating up the East Coast to as far away as New Jersey.

The environmental disaster continues as government agencies spray thousands of tons of chemicals under the ocean surface to break up the oil.  The use of these toxic chemicals at this ocean depth has never been tried before and there is no data on the impact the chemicals will have on the sea life of the area.

Many local residents believe they are witnessing their livelihoods and their way of life being destroyed.  In the mean time, BP executives are desperately trying to escape responsibility for the disaster.

At a recent news conference, President Obama harshly reprimanded BP for trying to dodge its responsibility for what is turning out to be the greatest environmental disaster in American history.

A Good Woman And A Bottle Of Wine

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers and writers.  It’s the Old Soldier here doing what the Old Soldier does: blogging and writing.  It’s another lovely day in Pittsburgh.  I’ve already gone for my early morning walk and now after putting in a few hours at the computer I’m ready for my afternoon walk.  There’s hardly a cloud in the sky.

But before I go out I’d like to leave you with another post.  I have another story from the archives for you.  Let me give you some background on this story.

I took early retirement because I wasn’t working steady enough to pay my rent and I was afraid of losing my apartment.  I knew that my social security check would at least pay my rent.

Just before I took early retirement,  I took the state civil service test for the State of Pennsylvania.  Of all the people who took the test for Allegheny County, the county I live in, I scored in the top 3%.  Yes, indeed.  I went for the interview and they loved me.  Ladies and gentlemen, the job paid $36,000 with benefits.

A woman from the county called me and asked which office did I prefer to work in.  There were three offices and all three were on the bus line.  I told her the one in the State Office Building downtown.  She said she would get back to me within two weeks and then I would be asked to come downtown to sign the contract of employment.

Finally, at the age of 61 I had the best job of my life.

A few days later the governor put an indefinite freeze on all state hiring because of the deepening recession.  That was the end of my budding career as a state employee.

I wrote the following flash fiction story before the governor announced the hiring freeze.  Before the freeze I was a happy man.

Before we get to the story let me remind you that you can have every issue of The Gazette delivered to your inbox every morning by taking out a free subscription.  Just click on the subscription tab at the top of the page and follow the instructions.  Now for the story.

Happiness

He was now an Income Maintenance Caseworker for the State of Pennsylvania. It would be the best job he’d ever had. At the age of forty-seven, he finally had his feet on solid ground. He could even start paying back his student loans.

He left the bar with a twelve pack of beer in a plastic sack. He didn’t have an umbrella. He turned up the collar of his coat against the windy, rainy Pittsburgh night and walked the three blocks to his very modest North Oakland apartment.

Without putting on any lights he clicked on the small radio/CD player that sat on the two, stacked speakers from his youth and days as a frontman for several local basement rock bands. The radio was always tuned to the local public classical music station. The opening bars of “Ode to Joy” began. He took off his coat and hung it up and sat on the sofa in the semi darkness and smoked a cigarette and drank a can of beer and watched the night rain beat against his window pane.

He put out the cigarette in the ashtray on the low table and reached for the telephone that sat on the computer stand next to the sofa. The face of the receiver glowed and he punched in a number.

On the other end a woman’s cultured voice said, “Richard, hello.”

“I got the position.”

“Congratulations!”

“Can you come over?”

“To spend the night?”

“Yes.”

“Let me think.” She was a hostess at a local upscale restaurant. Her two children were away at college and her ex-husband had left years ago. “All right. I can manage that. I’ll have to pack a few things.”

“Oh,” he said.

“Yes?”

“Bring the black nightie?”

“All right.”

“Gloria, we can start making plans now. We can have a life together.”

“I’ll bring something special.”

“I have beer and everything for sandwiches.”

“I’ll pick up a bottle of wine. Good wine. We’ll celebrate. Just give me an hour.”

He sat in the dark waiting. He had a decent job now and a good woman who slept with him. He got up and took a shower.

Blogging About Blogging

This blog has been around for over a year and a half now.  The Old Soldier has learned a few things in that time.  I’ve developed a passion for blogging.  I wake up every morning looking forward to hitting the keyboard.  I even make a little money from blogging and I’m looking forward to making more than just a little.

Even though The Gazette is a flash fiction blog it’s also very much a blog for bloggers about blogging.  I would like to share with you some of the things that I have learned about blogging.

Here are three links about blogging to get you started.

Turning Reality Into Fiction

I have a short story for you that I wrote over a year ago when I was down and out.  I’m doing much better now.  But the reason that I’m presenting this flash fiction story to you is just to show how your every day life can be turned into first-class flash fiction.

Coming up with good material can be very difficult.  Remember, there are no boring stories only boring writers.  No matter what your life is like you can get a good flash fiction story out of it if you are a writer.  Writing is a matter of turning mud into gold.

Before we go to the story let me encourage you to take out a free subscription to The Gazette.  You will get every issue delivered to your inbox.  The subscription tab is at the top of the page.

And if you can spare $6.00 download your copy of the eBook.  Just go to the sidebar on the right and click on the link.  You’ll love the book.

Now for the story.  Everything happened just the way it’s written.

The Greeter

Paul Langley was thinking, how do I pay my rent for next month? Standing at his post at the main entrance to the UPMC Braddock, he could see the nearly empty parking lot was wet from the misty rain falling in the gray of the early morning light. UPMC Braddock is a small hospital, only 199 beds, just outside Pittsburgh. An old woman in a motorized chair slowly approached the entrance. She was alone.

Paul Langley still took his position as a “Greeter” seriously even though word had come down that the hospital was not going to hire anyone from the Senior Community Service Employment Program of AARP, the program he’d been in six months now.

He walked with the old woman in the motorized chair through the main building and over to the Professional Building where he got on the elevator and took her to Suite 209 for her dental appointment. The old woman seemed to be partially blind and her hands and legs were slightly crippled. She spoke with great difficulty. He handed the clerk the appointment card he got from the old woman’s purse and smiled down at the old woman before he left. She wouldn’t have made it without him.

Back at his post at the entrance he stood with the woman who had the next shift. She had more financial resources than he did.

He said, “I’m screwed.”

“Don’t be so proud. Apply to LIHEAP. Apply to Public Assistance. Let them help you with your utilities. Let them help you with the groceries.”

“I’m still screwed.”

The 61B bus back to Pittsburgh didn’t leave for another half an hour. He sat in the little waiting room and opened the paper he’d bought that morning in the dark in the rain from the vending machine at the corner of South Craig and Forbes, the street lights standing sentry up and down the glistening avenue. The Steelers had lost 34-13. When he looked up the old woman in the motorized chair was talking to the woman on “Greeter” duty.

“What’s his name?” the old woman in the motorized chair sputtered, pointing a crippled hand toward him.

“His name’s Paul.”

“Paul,” she said with difficulty, “would you come here?”

He put down the paper and walked over to her. He realized she was crying. With difficulty she said something which took a moment for him to figure out. She had said, “May I kiss you on the cheek?”

He gave a light laugh to cover his confusion. Then he understood. “Sure,” he said. He bent down and she kissed him.

News: Oil Spill Solutions Keep Failing

The public knows about the April 20th explosion of the BP Deepwater Horizon rig.  The public knows about the 11 crew members that were killed in the explosion.  The public has a general idea of the devastation the disaster is having on the environment and the livelihoods of people from Texas to Florida.  And the public knows that the executives of the companies involved in the disaster don’t want to take responsibility for the disaster.

What the public may not be as aware of is that each one of the solutions to capping the oil spill (from the 100 ton containment box and the much smaller containment box to the chemicals being used under water to break up the oil and the recent effort to put a six-inch pipe in the twenty one-inch well column) are all experimental.

They’ve never been done before and each one so far has failed.

The Flash Fiction Fanatic

Who is this flash fiction fanatic?  How can we identify this person?

The flash fiction fanatic is driven to capture all of life in 1,000 words or less.  This person knows that the act of writing flash fiction is a revolutionary act.  It is a dangerous act.  It is an act to bridge the distance between the short story and the poem.  It is an act that seeks to engage the reader in the process of the creation of art.

When a flash fiction writer succeeds in writing a good piece of flash fiction, the reader’s imagination will contribute to the story all that the writer can only imply.

The flash fiction fanatic is on an endless quest to create a true partnership of creation with a flash fiction audience.

The flash fiction fanatic is an explorer of the inner sky.

Writing: Looking For Inspiration

I’m thinking about the subject of inspiration today.  Where do you find your inspiration for creative writing?

It’s 2:00 pm and I just got back from a long walk through the neighborhood of Bloomfield here in Pittsburgh.  Bloomfield is often called “Little Italy.”

The sun finally came out and I walked down Liberty Avenue pass Del’s Italian Restaurant and down Main Street to the new UPMC Children’s Hospital on Penn Avenue.

I watched all the people and the motor vehicle traffic and the sun felt warm on my face and I thought about life and love and death and flash fiction.

It was a good walk.  Then I walked back to my apartment here in Oakland to work on my blog.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Where Do You Find Inspiration?

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers and writers.  Even though it’s suppose to reach the high 70s today in Pittsburgh, the day is overcast right now and it’s almost noon.  But before I go out for my walk I want to do a little blogging.  I want to blog about inspiration.

A flash fiction writer often has to write even when he or she cannot find inspiration.  But it’s nice to get inspiration when you can find it.

Writing can be a lonely business.  Here’s a link that may get you in the mood to do a little writing today, Blogging: Inspiration Everywhere

A Great Flash Fiction Contest

When I started out writing flash fiction I wish there was a flash fiction contest for flash fiction writers like the contest that is here on this blog.

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers and writers.  This is the Old Soldier reporting from Pittsburgh.

Last night I watched the best film about The Doors that I have ever seen on television.  It was on public television and it was a real treat.  It was a television event.

Much like the flash fiction contest of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is a real event for blogging and for flash fiction writing.

Go to the top of the page and click on Open Contest/Submissions for the guidelines to the contest and good luck.

Using Words To Touch Life

The beauty of creative writing is that words help us to touch the idea of life.  For life is life.  There is no substitute for life.  Without life there is no creative writing; but if a creative writer has enough skill and enough luck then life can be projected onto the page with a power that allows us to step back and reflect on the life we are living.  This is part of the beauty of creative writing.

Look around at the flash fiction stories on this blog.  Each one of them helps us to touch life.  Become part of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette writing community.

Saving The Best For Last

What flash fiction writer doesn’t long to put a twist at the very end of his or her flash fiction story?  It’s not always possible.  Some stories don’t lend themselves to a twist ending.  And a serious flash fiction writer doesn’t want a twist ending to be just a cheap trick.  For a twist ending to be good the reader must not see it coming and the ending must make perfect sense.

The best twist ending is one that comes as a surprise to the writer.  Then the writer knows the ending will probably come as a surprise to the reader.

BP Oil Disaster Has No End In Sight

The BP oil disaster continues.  BP cannot stop the oil spill.  The story of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is the story of one failure after another.  There was the explosion that killed several crew members working on the rig.  The bodies of several of the crew members will never be found.  Then BP played down the amount of oil that was spilling into the gulf.  Then there was the 100 ton containment box that was lowered down 5,000 feet to set over the well head.  The box was to capture the oil and deposit it in a tanker waiting on the ocean surface.  That failed.  Now BP is lowering another, much lighter box down to do the same thing.

In the mean time at least two relief wells are being drilled to lessen pressure on the main well.  But the relief wells will not be ready for at least two more months.

And all this time 200,000 gallons of crude a day spill into the waters off Louisiana.  The oil slick slowly moves to shore destroying the livelihoods of a 250,000 or more people from Texas to Florida.

Scientist are warning that if the oil gets into the Gulf Stream it will travel up the East Coast of the United States causing more chaos.

Still, there is no end in sight.

When Is Flash Fiction Too Short?

Can flash fiction be too short?  Many of the definitions of flash fiction that I have come across deal with the word count of a flash fiction story.

But I like this definition: A flash fiction story is made up of a setup, a buildup and a payoff about a significant event with closure

So, the writing of a flash fiction story may have less to do with the word count and more to do with form.

Of course, a flash fiction writer doesn’t want to go too much higher than 1,000 words and probably cannot go lower than three words.  You know, giving one word for the setup, one word for the buildup and one word for the all important payoff.
