Let Your Story Write Itself

You’re busy.  You have responsibilities.  You want to write but you don’t have time to write.  My writing advice to you is to let your flash fiction story write itself.

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers and writers.  Now you’re convinced the Old Soldier is crazy.  Let your story write itself.  I’m crazy all right.  Crazy like a fox.

I’m retired now but when I first started writing flash fiction I didn’t have much time for writing, either.

Back then I wrote in pencil on long, yellow legal pads.  I would begin a story, mainly jotting down impressions and notes.  Then I might have to leave that story for a day or more.  I would just go about living my life.

I would come back to the story and maybe this time get a very rough first draft done and then leave the story for a couple of more days.  This could go on for a couple of weeks or more.  Eventually, I would have a complete short story.

By living my life, each time I worked on the story I brought fresh eyes and new energy to my writing.  When I was away from my writing desk I would think about the story.

It was a wonderful way to write a flash fiction story.
