The Old Soldier With Friend At A Doors Tribute Band Concet About 10 Years Ago

My blogging, writing and flash fiction friends.  You know there is a new department on this blog and I think a lot of you are missing it.

It’s the Old Soldier checking in on this lovely spring day in Pittsburgh.  The Old Soldier made a trip to “Little Italy.”  Stopped at Del’s to pow wow with the customers and staff, got a cheap six-pack of Pabst at Armand’s and hoofed it back to my humble apartment.

Now he’s enjoying cold beer and a cup of chili con carne with plenty of hot sauce.  Only a cup.  The Old Soldier is in training for karaoke at Del’s this Friday night.  That means breathing and stretching exercises every morning and only enough food to survive.  Can’t have all that pressure on the diaphragm.

Yes, karaoke is serious business.

Happiness For Readers And Writers

It’s around 9:00 AM in Pittsburgh, the start of a new day of blogging.  It’s a sunny, chilly day but the temperature is supposed to go from the low 20s to the mid 40s.

Writing: Do Real People Make Good Characters?

It’s around 9:30 PM and the blogging day is coming to an end.  But there are still things to blog about.  And one is, do real people make for good characters?  Yes, that’s a good one.

Well, every person over the age of 12 is worth having a book written about them.  A human being is a very complicated creature, even the life of a very innocent person would make for a good novel. 

But even a good novel cannot capture everything about a person.  The very act of turning a real person into a character changes that person into a simpler creature no matter how good and thorough the writer is.

And when it comes to the flash fiction story, a writer’s area of operation is very slight.

The trick is, a good character is very different from a real person no matter how closely the writer models the character on a person.
