The Old Soldier woke up this morning to reports in the media that in a surprise dawn raid the Occupy Wall Street encampment had been cleared out by New York City police.
Eventually, this will happen to all the occupy encampments throughout the nation. What we the 99% have to do is to keep our eyes on the prize. The encampments are wonderful symbols for the movement. Symbols energize movements; but the prize is to make our political leaders less responsive to corporate funders who make up 1% of the population and more responsive to the rest of us.
Ultimately, the prize must be achieved through the ballot box. But like all successful movements based on civil disobedience, the first battles will be fought in the streets. The street struggle has just begun. First the streets; then the ballot box.
In one form or another, the Occupy Movement will survive. It will survive because corporate control of our democracy is not going away any time soon.
