The Old Soldier just got finished reading an article in the Pittsburgh City Paper about the Occupy Pittsburgh encampment. As other encampments around the nation are being torn down by the authorities, the Occupiers in downtown Pittsburgh are vowing not only to stay, but to invest thousands of dollars from donations to upgrade their encampment at Mellon Green for the winter.
This may be folly. Bank of New York Mellon owns the parklet that the OPM has its encampment on. The OPM risks not only its tents but also its donated money by staying in its encampment.
The encampments are a great symbol; but they are untenable. One should only fight losing battles when there is no choice. The Occupy Pittsburgh Movement has a choice: the message.
And because of the encampments, the message is being heard. Now for step two: making alliances and wielding political leverage. Defending the encampment will impede step two.
