This Is Why Good Flash Fiction Is So Difficult To Write

The operative word here is “good.”  Anyone with enough perseverance can write a bad play, a bad novel or a bad short story.  But to write a good anything is a real accomplishment; and a good flash fiction story makes one very particular demand on a writer that is unique when it comes to fiction.

So, why is it so difficult to write a good flash fiction short story?

The short answer is, it takes two people to write a good flash fiction story: the writer and the reader.

The reason this is true is that most of a good flash fiction story takes place in the imagination of the reader.  The better the story is, the more of it that the reader contributes.

The long answer to why it is so difficult to write a good flash fiction story is that many writers do not know how to let the reader help to write the story, or at least not help enough to make the story really good.
