The Old Soldier brought back Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone, The Essential Writing of Hunter S. Thompson from the library. Thompson joined Rolling Stone back in the 70s when the publication was a newspaper that covered social, cultural and political unrest and rock and roll. Hunter was an original. He rode with the Hell’s Angels and wrote about it. Hunter was a wild man: drinker, drug user and one hell of a journalist. He was the original gonzo reporter.
If the Old Soldier is to make the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette a respected publication of serious writing and brazen sexuality, he can learn a great deal from Hunter S. Thompson.
Hunter died in 2005, but his impact on journalism lives on.
