A novel goes from “A” to “Z”.
A short story can go anywhere from “A” to “E” or even “F”.
A flash fiction story only goes from “A” to “B”.
Or to put my analogy in others words: when writing a flash fiction story, keep it simple. In flash fiction, less is always more. Don’t make your flash fiction story complicated.
The form (structure) of the flash fiction short story is as simple as haiku poetry, which is 5,7,5. That’s it. For flash fiction it’s intro, build up, resolution. That’s it.
And just like the haiku poem, the surface of the flash fiction story should always be simple, too.
But just like the haiku poem, the real meaning of a flash fiction story is always below the surface. That’s where things are complicated.
