Don’t let the length of the flash fiction short story hinder your choice of subject matter. That’s a mistake that too many writers make. The real problem is that sometimes a writer will pick a story that cannot be told in 1,000 words or less; but story and subject matter are two different things.
A novel usually tells a story that takes place over an extended period of time: weeks, months and years.
A flash fiction story usually takes place over minutes, hours or days.
Once a writer understands this about flash fiction that writer can write about anything: sex, love, death, homesickness, alcoholism, marriage…anything at all.
