Writers, Flash Fiction Can Change Your Life

Woman As Art

I’m not kidding.  Flash fiction changed my life.  How can flash fiction change your life?

Well, first you have to think of yourself as a flash fiction writer, not a writer of flash fiction, but a flash fiction writer.  There’s a difference.

What’s the difference?

Someone who simply writes flash fiction can also be a novelist, or a playwright or a poet.

A flash fiction writer pretty much writes only flash fiction.  Oh, he or she may dabble in other genres, but for the most part the writer writes only flash fiction.  And when flash fiction is the focus of a writer’s creative life, that writer begins to experience life differently; because everyday, mundane actions are what flash fiction stories thrive on.

It would be quite a challenge for a novelist to write a novel about a pat on the back.  Sure, it could be done, but that novelist would have to do some pretty fancy footwork to write an entire novel about it.

For a flash fiction writer, making a pat on the back a significant event in a character’s life is what flash fiction writers do.  And there is no need for fancy footwork.  As a matter of fact, there is no room in a flash fiction short story for fancy footwork.  The story is too damn short.

Once a writer accepts herself or himself as a flash fiction writer (and not just someone who happens to write flash fiction) that writer sees the world differently.

Flash fiction can change your life.
