A Blog Of Great Flash Fiction And 444 Hits Every Day

Woman As Art

When good news happens I like to let the readers of this blog know about it.  When the Old Soldier checked his stats this morning he saw that the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette has averaged 444 hits a day for the month of July.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

Hello hello hello, my brother and sister bloggers, readers and writers from all over the world.  Here’s a special shout-out to my fans in Italy.

The Madness And Genius Of Edgar Allan Poe

The Old Soldier continues to read the two books he got from the public library about Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).  The man definitely had lots of issues.  Of course, it did not help that his mother and his wife both died from tuberculosis when they were young women and that in spite of his great literary talent he usually lived in or near poverty.  No wonder he tried to find relief in alcohol.

But his theory of the “unity of effect” for the poem and the short story is still as valid today as it was when he proposed it, especially for the flash fiction short story.  Every element of the flash fiction story (characterization, description, locale, dialogue…) must be so integrated that the removal of one element will bring down the entire structure.

Well, it’s around 10:00 a.m.  It will be partly cloudy in Pittsburgh with a possibility of thunder showers and a high in the 80s.  This is the first post of the day.  I’ve done my breathing and stretching exercises and I’m eating a bowl of what I call corn beef stew prepared a few days ago in my own little crock pot.  You’ve got to love the crock pot.  What a great invention.

Explore the site.  There is a lot of good stuff on this blog.  There are over three years of archives and over 3,000 pieces of content.  And this magazine is now a paying market, a magazine published by a writer for other writers.

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is an online magazine of creative ideas, serious writing and brazen sexuality.
