Remember when our parents or well-meaning adults use to tell us when we were children that we could be anything that we wanted to be? Well, that’s not true. Most of us will never be anything that we want to be.
Growing up I desperately wanted to play quarterback in the NFL. I simply did not have the athletic talent. It didn’t matter how much I wanted it or how hard I trained and practiced. I was never going to be an NFL quarterback. I was never going to be a professional athlete of any kind.
What parents and well-meaning adults should say to children is this: find out what your passion is and then try to be the best you can be at it. If the child’s passion is writing, that is what the child should try to be, the best writer he or she can be.
Of course, life is complicated. Even if you grow up to be a pretty good writer, that does not mean you are going to make a living at it. Very few writers do. It doesn’t even mean you are going to make any money at it.
So, what good is it to have a passion for writing if you can’t make money at it?
To have passion in your life, passion for anything, will add excitement to your life.
There are a lot of people who wish they had some excitement in their lives. They work a job because it pays the bills. They stay in relationships that give them more pain than joy. They have no real passion in their lives.
You my friend, if you are passionate about writing, keep writing. A little passion in life is a wonderful thing.

Hello hello hello, all my fans from all over the world. And here’s a special shout-out to my fans in Germany. You know who you are.
The Old Soldier is full of passion this lovely summer day in Pittsburgh. It’s almost noon and I’m getting really for a nice, long walk through Schenley Park down by the University of Pittsburgh. But before I leave I want to get this post up.
Yes, the Old Soldier is passionate about blogging, writing and karaoke. I haven’t been to karaoke in weeks. Well, my Social Security arrives this week so I will be at karaoke this Saturday night at one of the old places, Nico’s Recovery Room. It has been voted the number one karaoke bar in the city by the Pittsburgh CityPaper for the last several years.
Yes, it’s good to have passion in your life at any age. Keep reading and keep writing that flash fiction.
