Pittsburgh is a university town. One of the reasons I love living in the neighborhood that I live in is that there are three universities within easy walking distance of my apartment building. When I went for my walk today, I stood at a bus stop and watched all the college students walk by.
School will be starting soon. Two blocks to my left was the campus of Carnegie Mellon University and two blocks to my right was the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The third university is a few blocks further to the right. There must be around eight colleges/universities in Pittsburgh.
My life as a college student began in 1964. I dropped out of a local college and joined the army. Then I went to different local colleges/universities off and on until I ended up graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006 with an MFA in fiction writing.
The Old Soldier has been a college student most of his adult life; but writers are also students. We are students of life. And our learning never stops.
I hope this magazine will be part of your curriculum.
