Do You Have Writer’s Block? Stop Thinking About Writing

When a writer hits a wall and there is simply no way that anything useful is going to get done, sometimes the best thing to do is to stop thinking about writing.  That’s right.  Get up from your workstation or wherever you do your writing and do something else.

The Old Soldier got the idea for this post by taking a nice long walk.  I just got back.  I wasn’t thinking about writing.  I was just enjoying the warm sun and the foot and vehicle traffic, the trees and lawns, the bicyclists and the joggers and the mansions that were built in the early 1900s and that are now private homes.

Sometimes I feel like Nick in The Great Gatsby, living in a cheap apartment next to the homes of millionaires.

And that’s how I got the idea for this post.

Well, it’s around 4:00 in the afternoon and the Old Soldier has accomplished a lot: three posts, breathing and stretching exercises, a little housekeeping, the breakfast dishes are done, I tried to call the Matriarch but got no answer, took a shower and shaved my head and went for a long walk.

Now I’m going to post this, do a load of laundry, do a little reading, watch the evening news and then get ready for karaoke.

Blogging: Behind The Scenes April 20, 2012

It’s Friday and you know what that means: karaoke at Del’s Bar and Italian Restaurant tonight.  Karaoke starts so late now.  Like 10:00 pm.  Just enough time for the Old Soldier to sing two or three songs and then to catch the last bus home.

But if the crowd is into karaoke like it was last Friday night and the Old Soldier is on his game it will all be worth it.  I think I might start off with People Get Ready by Rod Stewart and maybe my second song will be Send Me An Angel by Real Life.

How’s everyone doing?  The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is #4 world-wide for the search term “flash fiction” according to Google and yesterday the PFFG got 456 hits from all over the world.  I would like to send out a special hello to all my readers in Asia.

Love Doctor

I have a new flash fiction guest writer that will be published in the first week of May and I still have to send the Love Doctor her new assignment within the next few days for publication the first week of May, too.

I guess the ex-stripper that I met decided not to write a column for me.  Oh, well, you win some and you lose some.

It will be a warm (78), sunny day in Pittsburgh today.  I sure hope the authorities catch the person or people who have been sending in bomb threats to the University of Pittsburgh over the past several weeks.  The campus has been thrown into chaos.

This Magazine Is Not For Everyone: There’s Too Much Sex

The Old Soldier thinks that his little magazine is unique.  But he knows he’s not objective.  So, you will have to use your own judgement.  He does know that the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is not for everyone.  There are too many photos of naked women.  There is too much adult content.

I understand why a lot of people would not want to read a magazine like that; but those people would be missing the articles on blogging and writing and what it is like to be a writer.  Those people would be missing great flash fiction stories that have nothing to do with sex.  Those people would be missing the commentaries on current events, life, the world we live in and on posts that are helpful to senior citizens.

Strange

Senior citizens?  Sure, the Old Soldier is a senior citizen.

So, before you turn away, explore the site.  Get a good idea of everything that the PFFG has to offer.  The magazine is definitely not for everyone.  But it might be just right for you.

Writers, Inspiration And Living Near Two Great Universities

What a beautiful day in Pittsburgh.  The Old Soldier just came back (2:30 pm) from a lovely walk in the neighborhood.  It’s sunny and around 75 degrees outside.  I’m sitting at my workstation feeling young and productive.  That’s a great way to feel when you’re 65 and retired.

One of the things that I love about Oakland, the neighborhood that I live in, is that the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh is like a 15-minute walk away.  There were plenty of students out today.  A world-class university like Pitt gives a neighborhood a totally different vibe.  The vibe is sort of bohemian, and for this writer that’s a great vibe to be a part of.

Then Carnegie Mellon University is about a 20-minute walk from my apartment.  I walked down to Forbes Avenue and South Craig Street.  There were lots of shops and students from all over the world and a couple of ethnic restaurants and other places to eat and drink and CMU was two blocks up the avenue to the left and Pitt was two blocks down the avenue to the right.

It felt great to be a flash fiction writer.

A Sister Blogger Gets Naked For Her Readers

Conchita

The Old Soldier did a Google search this morning (April 19, 2012) for the term “flash fiction” and the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette was #3.  This blog got 421 hits yesterday from all over the world.  Hot damn.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

Hello hello hello, all my brother and sister bloggers, readers, writers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics.  How’s everyone doing?

It will be a mostly sunny day in Pittsburgh today with a high around 74.

The Old Soldier is full of pep and ready to do some serious blogging.  Now I know that people click on this blog because of the articles on blogging and writing and for the commentaries on living, life and current events.  And let’s not forget the great flash fiction stories.

Doctor Charly (Conchita) Carlyle

And I know that the readers (men and women) of the PFFG also enjoy the focus on female sexology.  The Old Soldier tries his best to give you some insights into female sexology; but the Old Soldier is still only a man.  What I’m trying to say is that it takes a woman to know a woman.

We all know how many facets there are in a woman’s sexual make-up.  Doctor Charly (Conchita) Carlyle, who is pictured in the two photos in this post and who also publishes a WordPress blog, knows a lot about female sexuality, too.

The Old Soldier is a big fan.  Check out her blog.

Naked Women, Flash Fiction And 514 Hits In One Day

On April 16, 2012 the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette got 514 hits from readers all over the world.  What is the excitement all about?

Photos of naked women is certainly one reason.

But there are millions of blogs that have photos of naked women.  Great flash fiction is one reason; but there are thousands of blogs about flash fiction.

What these other blogs do not have is the unique blend of articles, sexology, commentaries and fiction that you find here at the PFFG.  Then add to all of this a place where poets, non-fiction writers and fiction writers can submit their work for publication and be paid for their work and I think you begin to understand why the PFFG got 514 hits on the 16th of this month and why it is being read by more and more people every month.

Explore the site and welcome to the most dynamic flash fiction publication on the Internet.

Blogging: I Went Looking For My Stripper And More…

It’s around 2:00 on a sunny, mild (63) afternoon in Pittsburgh.  So, the Old Soldier has one post up already and he thought he would go to the bar, Armand’s (home of a great fish sandwich) and see if the former stripper that he talked to there on Sunday night would be in the bar this afternoon.

It was a long shot.  She has a good job now; and she was only a stripper for about one year.  She wanted to do something wild in life, she wanted to flaunt her sexuality so she became a stripper at the age of 39.  She told me about her experiences.  She said she made unbelievable money; but when she hit 40 she quit.  She was married at the time and the only way her husband would go along with her stripping was if she agreed to do it only for one year.

And she kept a journal of her experiences as a stripper.

Now she is in her 50s and she and I got to talking and I asked her to do a regular column for the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette (including photos) about her life as a stripper.  I gave her my card.  She really seemed excited about doing the column.  I agreed not to use her real name.  I would use her stage name.  She said she would check the site out and leave a comment or email me.

Well, it’s Tuesday and I have not heard from her.  Will she go through with it?  Only time will tell.

*****

The Old Soldier had to break down and have himself a couple of draft beers at Armand’s and to get himself a six-pack to bring home.  Now he only has enough money for karaoke this Friday.  That’s enough.

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette Got 514 Hits Yesterday

When the Old Soldier checked his stats this morning, he found that the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette got 514 hits yesterday.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

And this morning, Google had the PFFG ranked #4 in the world for the search term “flash fiction”.

Hello hello hello, it’s around 9:00 am and the blogging day has begun.  Well, I have not heard from that former stripper that I met at a bar in Bloomfield.  She was supposed to write a column for the PFFG about the life of a stripper (with photos), but I guess she changed her mind.

I’ll be publishing a new flash fiction story by a guest writer the first week of May, and guess what?  It has nothing to do with sex.

How much sex is too much sex in a flash fiction story?

The Old Soldier answers that question in the article, “How Explicit Can Your Flash Fiction Sex Story Be?”

The article is stuck to the front page followed by one of the most sexually explicit flash fiction stories as an example that the Old Soldier has ever written.  Check it out before the article and the story are rotated back to the archives.

Blogging: Behind The Scenes On April 16, 2012

First let me say that karaoke at Del’s in Pittsburgh’s “Little Italy” on Friday night was kickin’.  The audience was into it and the Old Soldier was on his game.

*****

Hello hello hello, all my brother and sister bloggers, readers, writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics.  This morning the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette had slipped back to #5 for the search term “flash fiction” on Google.  I’ll take #5.  The PFFG got 364 hits yesterday.

The Old Soldier finally got something for his crock pot: two Cornish hens and a carrot.  I’ll be putting it on as soon as I post this.  In the meantime I have some maccaroni salad, tomatoes, pastrami and bagels to keep me happy.  Oh, and beer.  This will probably be the last beer until karaoke this Friday.

It’s around 11:30 am, a sunny, warm (81) day in Pittsburgh.  I used my Medicare Health Insurance card as a bus pass for the first time Friday night.  No more walking to and from karaoke at night.

I met a 51-year-old woman in Armand’s bar (the best and biggest fish sandwiches in the city) while I was drinking in Little Italy on Saturday and she told me she had been a stripper at the age of 39 for one year.

Blogging: Behind The Scenes On April 13, 2012

It’s Friday.  You know what that means: karaoke at Del’s Bar and Italian Restaurant in Bloomfield (Little Italy), a 15-minute walk from the Old Soldier’s apartment.  But the Old Soldier won’t be walking.

I leave for karaoke around 9:00 pm.  It’s dark.  Then I usually end up walking back to my apartment around 1:00 am.  Not good.

Yesterday, when I went to get my senior citizens free bus pass at the Senior Citizens Center, they had me fill out a form and I will get my pass in about 10 days; but the nice old lady who helped me fill out my form said I could use my red, white and blue Medicare Health Insurance card that I got when I turned 65 for a bus pass, too.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, and you are 65 and you have your card you can use that as a bus pass, too.

It’s time for me to give the Love Doctor a new assignment.  I’m kicking around a few topics.  One topic is, What percentage of women will admit to having sex with more than one man at the same time?

Sex and controversy, that’s what the Old Soldier wants.

Blogging: The Future Of This Blog As I See It

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette averages well over 300 hits every day.  But the Old Soldier dreams of the day when it averages over 1,000, 2,000 and even 3,000 hits every day.

I dream of the day when I can pay local women, who have never posed nude for anything in their lives, a nice fee to pose nude for the PFFG.  I dream of the day when the local movers and shakers in the city want to be interviewed by the PFFG.  I dream of the day when I can pay a respectable fee to poets, non-fiction and fiction writers for their work to be published by the PFFG.

Love Doctor

I dream of the day when I can pay the Love Doctor a generous fee for her work and to give her an expense account so that she can not only investigate a story but can also bring back photos.

Oh, well, everybody should have a dream.

Blogging: Behind The Scenes April 10, 2012

It’s 6:00 am.  The Old Soldier has been awake for two hours.  I could not sleep.  Too much on my mind, I guess.

What do I think about?

Well, of course, this magazine.  I checked the Google ranking of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette this morning.  The magazine is still at #5 for the search term “flash fiction.”  The PFFG got 402 hits yesterday and is averaging 329 hits every day so far this month.

I accepted another short story from a guest writer.  The scheduled date of publication is May 5, 2012.  That’s when the writer will get his $10.00 fee.  I also solicited an essay about blogging and being a blogger from another WordPress blogger.  If the essay is accepted (the writer will get a $5.00 fee) it will go under the Anything Goes (Non-Fiction) category in the sidebar on the left.

Yesterday, I applied for a special program for low-income customers with my electric company.  The program will help me pay my electric bill.  And I did not spend any money on beer yesterday.

I’m still reading my book about the Negro baseball leagues that I got from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.  The leagues had all kinds of financial problems before they became stable businesses.  As the editor/publisher of the PFFG, I can sure identify with that.

I’ve gotten into a good personal morning regimen of breathing and stretching exercises, a little cleaning, blogging, getting my finances in order and karaoke on Friday nights.  And I’m trying to get into the habit of making at least three phone calls a week to family.

A writer’s personal life directly impacts his or her work.

Blogging: 429 Hits In One Day And Ranked #5 By Google

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette got 429 hits yesterday and this morning Google had the PFFG ranked #5 world-wide for the search term “flash fiction.”

You can’t beat that with a stick!

Hello all my brother and sister bloggers, readers, writers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics.  Today the high will be 59 in Pittsburgh on a partly sunny day.  It’s around noon.  The Old Soldier is at his workstation, eating Ramen Noodles with pieces of red pepper and chucks of beef in it as he sips on a can of beer and does a little blogging.

The PFFG continues to grow.  I think it continues to grow because it is a paying market, it publishes articles and commentaries on current events, blogging and writing and it publishes great flash fiction.

It has adult content.

It is a publication about life.  I think that’s why it got over 9,000 hits in March and it got 429 hits yesterday.

Blogging: Behind The Scenes April 8, 2012

Yesterday, I saw my peeps Rick and Dianne (baby boomers) at Del’s.  They are probably the only real friends that the Old Soldier has.  They have invited me to their home several times.  I never go; but they do invite me.  They live in an upper-middle class suburb of Pittsburgh.

They like the Old Soldier.  They met me at karaoke at Del’s years ago.  They don’t come to karaoke now because they don’t like to drink and then have to take that long drive back to their home late Friday night.  They don’t want to get busted for being under the influence; so now I just see them on Saturday afternoons at Del’s.

How’s everyone doing?  I checked the Google ranking of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette for the term “flash fiction” this morning and the magazine is at #5.

When I was at Del’s yesterday afternoon, there was this old woman, older than me, standing with a walker outside of Del’s with a sign asking for help.  I went out and talked to her.  She had been robbed, and needed money for her medicine for her high-blood pressure.  I gave her $2.00 and went across the street to the supermarket and bought her $15.00 worth of groceries.

Now that I’m 65, my heart goes out to senior citizens like her.

Some Of My Old Amateur Photography

I have a new flash fiction submission from a guest writer to read and I renewed my library book about the Negro baseball leagues.  Today is a day of rest for the Old Soldier: no stretching and breathing exercises and no house keeping (cleaning).  That all begins again tomorrow.

It’s around 1:00 in the afternoon on a cloudy day in Pittsburgh.  Keep reading and keep writing that flash fiction.

My Email To The Love Doctor About Women Doing Porn

Love Doctor

Love Doctor:

Great reporting.

As the editor/publisher of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, I do like to showcase the women who enjoy their porn experiences, where they are celebrated for having sex on camera and are not forced to do anything they don’t want to do; but as your report points out these women are in the minority.

As far as I can tell, it all depends on who the women work for.  The site that I subscribe to tries to make the women feel comfortable, to show them a good time.  For the most part the site succeeds.  The women come back to do more porn (since the site uses amateurs the women can only do a few videos before they have to move on).  Some of the women have such a good time that they recommend the site to their roommates, sisters and even their mothers.  I am not making this up.  And yes, the roommates, sisters and mothers show up to do their porn videos.  You can’t buy that kind of good-word-of-mouth publicity.  The site has been around for several years and it never runs out of willing, eager women who want to be in porn.

But this site is unique, just like The Gazette.

I enjoy the site because most of the time, not all of the time, but most of the time the women obviously enjoy themselves and make good money, too.

Anyway, great reporting and keep up the good work.

Guy-
