When a writer hits a wall and there is simply no way that anything useful is going to get done, sometimes the best thing to do is to stop thinking about writing. That’s right. Get up from your workstation or wherever you do your writing and do something else.
The Old Soldier got the idea for this post by taking a nice long walk. I just got back. I wasn’t thinking about writing. I was just enjoying the warm sun and the foot and vehicle traffic, the trees and lawns, the bicyclists and the joggers and the mansions that were built in the early 1900s and that are now private homes.
Sometimes I feel like Nick in The Great Gatsby, living in a cheap apartment next to the homes of millionaires.
And that’s how I got the idea for this post.

Well, it’s around 4:00 in the afternoon and the Old Soldier has accomplished a lot: three posts, breathing and stretching exercises, a little housekeeping, the breakfast dishes are done, I tried to call the Matriarch but got no answer, took a shower and shaved my head and went for a long walk.
Now I’m going to post this, do a load of laundry, do a little reading, watch the evening news and then get ready for karaoke.
Keep reading and keep writing that flash fiction.
