Local News: Occupy Pittsburgh The Top Story

Tonkotsu (Pork Broth) Ramen Noodles

The Old Soldier was stretched out on the sofa, having just finished a bowl of hot Ramen Noodles with two slices of green pepper in them, when the evening, local news began on the television.

Occupy Pittsburgh was the lead story.  The group marched into downtown Pittsburgh today and demonstrated in front of the headquarters of several corporations.

TV reporters interviewed some of the demonstrators.  A lot of students, union members, mothers and fathers (some with children) were among the demonstrators.  I didn’t get a number as to how many demonstrators there were because at that moment my TV had a glitch; but a spokesperson for the group said that this demonstration was only the beginning.

I sure hope so.

News: Pensions Are Available For Veterans

Giant Eagle in Stow, Ohio

Image via Wikipedia

If you served in the military during war-time and you are at least 65 years old, you may be eligible for a military pension.

The Old Soldier just found out that he is eligible for a military pension and you may be eligible, too.  Okay, let me tell you how I found out that I’m eligible.

The reason that I call myself the Old Soldier is because I really am old and I really was a soldier.  I served with the 1st Cav (Air Mobile) in Vietnam in a 105 mm howitzer battery, towed.

Well, because of the job market and other factors, after I got my MFA in fiction writing from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006 I found it tough to get a job.  Being 59 years old did not help me much either.  So, I struggled along until I was able to take early social security.  And with a small pension from Giant Eagle, I was able to keep my apartment and I thought what the hell I may as well become a full-time blogger.

To make a long story short, money flow is tight.  Real tight.

Enter my older sister whose husband fought in Korea.  She came across some literature about military pensions and she sent it to me.  That’s how I found out that I’m eligible for a military pension when I turn 65 in October.

Sweet.

I’m in the process of investigating this further, but this is the basic criteria as I understand it.

  • You have to have served in the US military during wartime.  Even if you were not in a war zone, you are still eligible.
  • You have to be at least 65 years old.
  • You have to qualify under the income limitations.

What is really nice is that under the income limitations a veteran can deduct a lot of expenses and still qualify.

The phone number for the VA in Pennsylvania is 1-800-827-1000.

Also, the following site is full of great information.  Be patient and check the site out and you will find out if you qualify.  Just follow the prompts.  You want to end up at Compensations & Pensions: http://va.gov

Ever get a good idea and there is no doubt in your mind that it is a pretty good idea?  Well, the Old Soldier got one hell of a good idea a few days ago.

I’m always sending out calls for writers to send in flash fiction submissions to this blog.  And over the past two and a half years I have published dozens of Guest Writers in the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.  I would stick the Guest Writer’s story on the Home page for a few days then it would disappear into the archives.

Well, I’ve decided to go into the archives and to stick a story of a Guest Writer on the Home page for a few days and to keep rotating all this flash fiction talent until every story has had a second run.  As a matter of fact I’ll just keep the stories of my Guest Writers in constant rotation, adding a new dimension to the most dynamic flash fiction blog on the internet.

So, whenever you visit this site, be sure to check the Home page for a new story from the archives by one of these talented Guest Writers.

Hello hello hello, my brother and sister bloggers, readers, writers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics.  The Old Soldier fell asleep on the sofa last night after watching the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! on retro-television.  The movie was about the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbour.  The filmmakers went to great lengths to make the film historically accurate.  The Japanese even spoke Japanese.  There were sub-titles.  I loved it.

News: The Student Loan Crisis

The Statue of Liberty front shot, on Liberty I...

Image via Wikipedia

There was the Wall Street banking crisis, the housing crisis and soon we will have the student loan crisis.

Hello hello hello, my brother and sister bloggers, writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics.  If you’ve been paying attention to the latest media reports, the United States is about to be hit with another financial tsunami: tens of millions of undergraduate and graduate students will default on their student loans.

To get a degree, undergraduate and graduate students are taking on debt they will never be able to repay.  And with the bleak employment picture projected to remain bleak for several years, many prospective employees with college and university degrees will be forced to work jobs they are over qualified for or jobs that have little to do with their fields of study.

Increasingly, the American dream is becoming a fantasy.

News: Laurence Fishburne’s Daughter Does Porn

Laurence Fishburne's Daughter

It is no surprise to me that the 19-year-old daughter of award-winning actor Laurence Fishburne has just done her first porno movie.

Hello hello hello, my brother and sister bloggers, writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics.  Media reports have surfaced that Montana Fishburne has just starred in her first porn movie.  Her dad must be stunned.  And reports say that the award-winning actor is devastated, but I’m not surprised by what his daughter has done.  She moved out of the house when she was 18.

One source quoted Montana Fishburne as saying, “Being in an adult film is not a big deal to me.”

The Old Soldier is no prude, but I must admit that when I try to get inside the heads of all these young girls who voluntarily allow their bodies to be ravished I can’t make that transition.  Once, I did write a flash fiction story about a young woman who talks her boyfriend into making sex tapes and selling them on the Internet.  The only motivations I could think of giving this young woman were money, notoriety and just  plain exhibitionism mixed with plenty of youthful lust.  But from the vantage point of my age, 63, is that enough?  I guess when you’re 19 years old like Montana Fishburne it is.

I wrote the following news commentary about adult videos a few weeks ago.  Of course, I wasn’t writing about young girls with famous fathers.

********************

News: A Commentary About Adult Videos

Pornography was around long before the Internet.  It was around before the invention of writing.  It can be found in numerous scenes painted on the walls of caves by our ancestors.  The Internet has sent the production and consumption of porn into overdrive.  An ever-increasing number of willing young women are showing up in porn videos.  Why?

I have read reports that the porn industry makes more billions of dollars than the movie industry and the music industry combined.  I have no doubt that the day will come when the porn-industry lobby will be one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington D.C.

The Old Soldier is no prude.  My own niece has been a webcam stripper since she was 19.  She’s in her early 20s now and makes more money each year than I ever made each year I was working before I retired.  She doesn’t do hard-core pornography…yet.

It is my belief that the stream of young women into porn is only going to increase.  Already, young women text pictures of themselves nude.  They make home videos of themselves having sex.  The logical next step is to get paid to do what they are already doing.  And if that means having sex with one or more strange men, so be it.

Being in a porn video does not carry the sort of stigma it use to for many young women between the ages of 18 and 25, many who are in college.  They use false names, withhold the names of their universities and then proceed to allow their bodies to be ravaged.  For so many of them, it’s naughty and very exciting stuff, all those aroused men and all those video cameras pointed at them, all those flash cameras going off in the background.  Often, the women have their own orgasms.  It’s easy money.

Like any industry, some porn sites are run better than others.  The smart porn sites make the shoots fun for the women.

There is one site that interviews the women before the shoot.  The interview is done in an office, the women in their street clothes.  The guy doing the interview has a talent for making these young women relax, to feel more comfortable about what is about to happen.  The interview makes the women seem very human.  They are definitely not porn stars.  They are strictly amateurs.  This site only wants amateurs.  Many of the amateurs are articulate.

After the shoot the women are again in their street clothes in the office for a final interview.  They are asked what they thought of the shoot, what they did and did not like.  You would be surprised at what many of them liked.  Let me put this as politely as I can.  A lot of them like the butt to mouth.  The male talent’s penis in the young womans’s butt then put directly in her mouth.  And the reason the young women give for liking this: “It’s so dirty.”  In describing the shoot the women often use the “fun.”

A large percentage offer to come back and shoot another video.  They agree to do things in the next video that they did not do in the first video.  Some have such a good time in the first video that they end up recommending their friends to the site.  You can’t pay for that sort of publicity.  In this way, the site has a never-ending stream of willing young women to have in its sex videos.

This can be easy money for the young women who do porn as a youthful experiment and then get out.  The trick seems to be not to end up on poorly run sites and not to become addicted to the easy money.

I can see the day coming when it won’t be unusual for a happily married woman in her 40s to be having a morning cup of coffee with her best female friend and to confide in her friend that she was pretty wild in her teens and 20s, that she did five porn videos from the time she was 18 to the time she was 26; only to have the best friend ask, “Did you ever see any of ’Mary’s Hot Gangbangs’?”

“You mean…”

“Yep, that was little old me.  I had the first orgasms in my life on those shoots.  The site kept bringing me back because they knew I wasn’t faking.  The guys subscribing to the site knew I wasn’t faking.  I ended doing seven gangbangs in all.”

“Does Steve know?”

“He would die.  Bob?”

“What they don’t know won’t hurt them.”

The End

News: Bankruptcy May Be BP’s Only Option

The American public and the world are witnessing the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history unfold in the Gulf of Mexico.  Investors are deserting BP.  All along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico seafood businesses, shrimpers, oystermen, the tourism industry and drilling crews that have been put out of work because of the oil spill at Deepwater Horizon all want money from BP.

BP has become poison to its own industry.  Experts in the oil industry are now secretly wondering how long BP can sustain not only the cost of the clean up but also the years of litigation that will come from the thousands of lawsuits that are only now beginning to be filed in court.

Many in the oil industry feel that Chapter 11 bankruptcy for BP is only weeks away.

Short Story Ideas That Work

News: Will The Oil Spill Hit The East Coast?

As BP fails again and again and again to stop the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, residents on the coast from Texas to Florida are beginning to realize the magnitude of the disaster which is now the greatest environmental disaster in the history of the United States.  Already, 25% of American waters in the Gulf of Mexico are too poisonous to fish.  These fisheries may stay too poisonous to fish for years to come.  Hundreds of thousands of people watch helplessly as their livelihoods and way of life is being destroyed.  Most the people who depend on the fisheries for their family income will be ruined and will never recover from this disaster.

BP has proven that it cannot close the head of the oil well and that the only sure solution will be the relief well that is being drilled but won’t be ready until August.

Calls for the Obama Administration to push BP aside and to take over the capping effort are nonsensical.  No administration knows more about drilling for oil one mile deep in the ocean than the oil companies that do this kind of work.  Why doesn’t Washington push BP aside?  To replace BP with what?

Something the media seems to be ignoring for the moment is, will the oil spill hit the East Coast?  Scientist have warned that the oil seems to have entered the current loop which will take the oil around the tip of Florida where the Gulf Stream will pick the oil up and spread the crude from the shores of Florida to the shores of Pennsylvania.

Does Your Story Move?

Movement in a short story is absolutely necessary.  If there is no movement you don’t have a story.  Instead, you have a sketch.

The shorter your story is the less movement you need to make it a story.  Also, the less movement there is in a story the more believable the story will be.

What do I mean by movement?  Movement is the amount of narrative distance your short story has to travel to reach its resolution.  So, if you’re writing a 200-word short short the story had better begin just before the resolution.  If you’re writing a 2,000-word story you can begin further away from the resolution.

When a writer creates a story, there must be just the right amount of movement to make the story seem true.

When I Was A Young Man (A Flash Fiction Story)

I had written my quota of pages for that day. I left my apartment and a few minutes later I was walking around the big bend in the avenue. The Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh stood tall and gray against the bright sky. There were lots of other young people wearing shorts, holding hands and eating ice cream cones. Someone called my name.

It was Lisa Graham. She was a friend of Sandy’s. Lisa’s dark hair was cut close to her skull in back and at the sides. It was full and curly on top and swept forward down over her right eye. She wore a white, sleeveless T-shirt with RELAX in red on the front, black lace gloves with no fingers, and black cloth stretch pants ending just below her knees. Some sort of black boxing shoes were on her feet. Her socks were bright red.

“What’s amusing?” she said.

“The way you dress. I like it. Come down to the place with me.”

I bought a newspaper along the way. I liked Lisa and her punk friends. I didn’t like the way there always seemed to be something strange about her eyes. I didn’t think she needed glasses. We sat at a table next to the big window on the Bouquet Street side. Lisa seemed younger than Sandy though they were the same age. We each had a mug of beer.

“Sandy told me you work for a supermarket chain,” she said.

“Five years.”

“I can’t imagine working anywhere five years.”

“It’s only three nights a week and four hours Sunday mornings. I saved my money while I was in the army.”

“I’m just floating through school. I don’t know what I want to do. I might be dead next year.”

“Hope not.”

“I’ll stay in school as long as my parents pay for it.”

I took a drink of my beer and looked out the window.

“Do you party?” she said.

“I like to have a good time.”

“No. I mean do you party?”

“Orgies?”

She laughed, sipped some of her beer and looked at me. She said, “Is beer all you do?”

“If I’m smart.”

“I have friends who can get you anything you want.”

“Oh?”

“Did you do anything in ‘Nam?”

“My unit was clean.”

She shrugged and finished her beer and left a little while later. It was a lovely day. I had done a good amount of writing that morning and now the sunny day made me happy. I opened the newspaper. A man confessed to slaughtering his wife and children. A chemical spill had forced an evacuation. A woman police officer emptied her revolver into her sleeping live-in boyfriend. A rapist claimed his fifth local victim. A family of seven was found killed execution style. Americans were reported still being held prisoners in Vietnam. I got up and threw the paper away.

The place got crowded. When Henry came in he didn’t see me. He started to walk back out. I called to him and he came over and sat at my table.

“What’s up, Henry?”

“Everything’s turning to shit. I need some bucks.”

“You had three gigs last week.”

“They didn’t show.”

“The band?”

“I’m sick of bands. No body wants to practise. They just want to jam. The bass player can’t get along with the drummer. The manager is screwing the chick keyboardist. The guitarist wants to sing more lead.”

“Will a twenty help?” I gave him the money.

“I had some people lined up to see us. The band said they were tired of playing the same place every week. It was a paying gig. So what if it is the same place. It was packed every Saturday night. You’ve seen it. We were bringing in an extra two thousand dollars every Saturday night. Manny loved us. There was never any trouble. All the frat parties lined up for the fall. They were going to give us a shot here on Wednesday nights. And the band doesn’t show up.”

He was a good singer and a great performer. I hated to hear the band was no more. Sandy walked in. A shoulder bag with a long strap was slung from her left shoulder. Her light brown, short hair was windblown and she was wearing sunglasses and a long, white sleeveless sundress. Her face, neck and arms were lightly tanned. She looked fresh and very young. She saw me and made her way up to the table. Henry looked up. She took off her sunglasses and smiled down at us. Henry stood up.

“Henry, this is Sandy Meyers. Sandy, Henry Porter.”

She reached to shake his hand. He held her hand, bowed slightly and kissed the back of her hand. She made a little curtsy. He gave her his chair and pulled another one over.

“Beer?” he said to Sandy.

“Thank you.”

“Henry, let me.”

“You get the next round.”

He made his way to the bar. Sandy leaned against me and kissed me in the mouth.

“Miss me?” she said.

“Always.”

She rubbed her nose against mine. She took a brush from her shoulder bag and ran it several times through her hair. She took out a compact, looked at her hair and face and then snapped the compact shut and put it and the brush back in the shoulder bag. She pressed a leg against mine. She wormed her hand into mine and we held hands under the table. Henry came back. She let go of my hand and we kept our hands on top of the table.

I said, “Here’s to the best damn lead singer in Pittsburgh.”

“Are you a singer?”

“When I’m up there.”

“I play a little piano,” Sandy said.

“Really?”

“Chop sticks.”

“I’ll kill myself!” he said. “I swear it!”

“You don’t like chop sticks?”

“He just lost his band.”

“An easy five hundred a night,” he said. “All the suds we could drink. All kinds of frat parties lined up. They don’t show.”

She said, “I had a friend who was in an all girls band. Roadsickness. Ever hear of them?”

“You mean Carsickness,” he said.

“No. Roadsickness.”

“They play Pittsburgh?”

“Mainly house parties.”

“What happened?” he asked.

“Oh, somebody slept with somebody’s boyfriend.”

“Exactly,” he said. “It’s not music. It’s comedy.”

After the third round Henry left. Sandy and I sat and looked at each other. I said, “How was your week?”

“I found out I maxed two exams,” she said.

“Get out!”

“I’m going to get another four hours in work-study, too.”

“Wonderful.”

“I had lewd thoughts about you.”

She looked around, leaned closer to me and pulled up her long white dress. Her legs were hairless and smooth. She wasn’t wearing a slip. I felt my groin tighten up. On the inside of her right thigh near the crotch of her white panties was a fading purplish mark the size of a half-dollar. She threw her dress drown.

“Did I do that?”

“I call it your vampire kiss,” she said.

“I guess I got carried away.”

“You always get carried away. That’s what I like about making love to you.”

We were holding both of each other’s hands on the table top.

“How’s that?” I said.

“You don’t hide anything,” she said. “You don’t keep anything back. I think it’s the only time you totally let go. You’re very oral.”

“Must mean arrested development or something. You bring out the beast in me.”

“You were beastly before I met you.”

We talked about this and that and then I said, “How’s your friend Lisa?”

“Oh,” she said. “All right.”

“She was in here earlier.”

“Was she?”

“What does she do?”

“She’s a student.”

“What does she do for money?”

“Her parents have money.”

“Enough for her to buy drugs?”

She let go of my hands. “If her parents knew…”

“She deals, doesn’t she?”

“What she doesn’t use.”

“What’s she in to?”

She sat in silence and would not look at me. The silence stretched between us. I took her hands in mine. She looked me full in the face. Any time she did that I always felt her basic sincerity. It was the sort of vulnerability and sincerity most of us lose when we stop being very young children. It made me feel she was sitting beside me naked and unaware she was naked.

“You don’t use anything,” I said. “Do you?”

“I get high on us.”

It was that day, sitting at that table, that I realized I loved Sandy Meyers.

News: Will Oil Spill Hit East Coast?

BP has finally had some success as the petroleum giant struggles to cap the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  It has recently inserted a pipe in the well head that is one mile below the ocean surface.  In can now siphon off oil and deposit it in a tanker floating 5,000 feet overhead.

However, the one mile pipe siphons off only 20% of the oil gushing into the ocean, leaving more than 200,000 gallons a day to pollute the waters off Louisiana.

Scientists are warning that large plumes of oil 10 miles long may have already moved into two loop currents.  One loop current will take the oil to the coast of Texas and the other loop current will take the oil to the Florida Keys.  Once the oil hits the Florida Keys it will only be a matter of time before it rounds the tip of Florida and begins floating up the East Coast to as far away as New Jersey.

The environmental disaster continues as government agencies spray thousands of tons of chemicals under the ocean surface to break up the oil.  The use of these toxic chemicals at this ocean depth has never been tried before and there is no data on the impact the chemicals will have on the sea life of the area.

Many local residents believe they are witnessing their livelihoods and their way of life being destroyed.  In the mean time, BP executives are desperately trying to escape responsibility for the disaster.

At a recent news conference, President Obama harshly reprimanded BP for trying to dodge its responsibility for what is turning out to be the greatest environmental disaster in American history.

News: Oil Spill Solutions Keep Failing

The public knows about the April 20th explosion of the BP Deepwater Horizon rig.  The public knows about the 11 crew members that were killed in the explosion.  The public has a general idea of the devastation the disaster is having on the environment and the livelihoods of people from Texas to Florida.  And the public knows that the executives of the companies involved in the disaster don’t want to take responsibility for the disaster.

What the public may not be as aware of is that each one of the solutions to capping the oil spill (from the 100 ton containment box and the much smaller containment box to the chemicals being used under water to break up the oil and the recent effort to put a six-inch pipe in the twenty one-inch well column) are all experimental.

They’ve never been done before and each one so far has failed.

News: Greece Will Default On Its Loans

Have you been watching the evening news lately?  Have you seen the riots in Greece?  Are you paying attention to the gathering economic crisis in Europe?  Why should Americans care?

Even though the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank are going to loan the Greek Government $150,000,000,000 that will still not keep Greece from defaulting on its loans.  That only keeps Greece from defaulting on its loans in the immediate future.  The loans of Greece will eventually be restructured.  No amount of austerity will squeeze enough money out of the Greek economy to pay back those loans.  Investors know that Greece will default and the money people are getting nervous.  What are they getting nervous about?

They are getting nervous about defaults spreading.  They are getting nervous about the economies of Portugal, Spain and Italy.  They are getting nervous about economies with huge debts like the UK and the United States.

And when investors get nervous they take their money out of the system.

We are only two steps away from another world-wide recession.  This is why officials in Europe are trying to desperately contain the coming Greek financial collapse.

News: Is Arizona’s Immigration Law Racists?

What is a racists law?  Is Arizona’s new immigration law racists?  Will the American people get national immigration law reform this year?  Is the issue of immigration the hot-button issue for 2010?

The crisis on the southwest border of the United States has been building for decades but neither Democratic or Republican administrations have had the guts to do anything about serious immigration reform in this country.  And now with the Hispanic population of the United States growing faster than any other ethnic group in America, no politician in Congress wants to alienate Hispanic voters.

So, the governor of Arizona acted.  But no immigration law enacted by a state can deal with illegal immigration on the southwest border of the United States.  Only a federal law can deal with this problem.  If I know this and you know this the politicians in Washington know this, too.

Still, we wait.  And we wait.  And…

News: How High Will Gasoline Prices Go Now?

The under water oil well owned by BP is still gushing tens of thousands of gallons of crude into the waters off  the coast of Louisiana every day.  Some experts estimate that this will continue for at least another seven days.  Other experts estimate the spill will continue for several weeks.  Officials are fearful that the oil spill will get into the Gulf Stream.  If this happens, the oil will travel up the East Coast of the United States.

Already, the livelihood of tens of thousands of people along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida has been destroyed.

BP management has given assurances that it will take total responsibility for this economic, ecological disaster.  How BP will do this is not known.  Several law suits have already been filed in court against BP.  If BP loses just a small percentage of these pending law suits it could possibly cost the company billions of dollars in damages.  Whether or not BP can survive this economic lost is unclear.  What is clear is the price of gasoline in the United States will be impacted by the disaster now unfolding at the Deepwater Horizon oil head.

President Obama stated that BP would be made to take total responsibility for the disaster.

News: Oil Headed For The East Coast

As the bad news continues from the Gulf Coast off Louisiana, officials of BP and the Obama Administration are not talking about the worst case scenario that is on everyones’ mind.  What happens when the oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig gets into the Gulf Stream?

Why should this be a worry?  Because the Gulf Stream flows around the southern tip of Florida and up the East Coast of the United States.  And as any college student in Environment 101 will tell you, the damage that the oil spill is doing to the eco system will be felt for years.

Already, the tourist and fishing business have taken an economic hit that means misery for tens of thousands whose livelihoods depend on the waters off the coast from Louisiana to Florida.

The East Coast could be next.
