How To Write Dialogue For Erotic Flash Fiction

As the editor/publisher of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, the Old Soldier gets to critique lots of flash fiction, some of it erotic flash fiction.  My critiques are always short but I hope helpful.

I might write, “This is a well-written sex scene but there is no story.”

Or I might write, “The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette does not publish stories about rape.”

I might even write, “The characters seem more like sexual athletes than real people.”

How can a writer of erotic flash fiction make his or her characters seem like real people?  One of the best ways is through dialogue.  And dialogue in an erotic story should do the same things that dialogue in any well-written story should do: project personality and help to move the story to a believable resolution.

Behind The Scenes (May 22, 2012)

The Old Soldier will be publishing a new report on female sexology by our own Love Doctor the first week of June.  I also have a flash fiction story for you by a new guest writer the first week of June.  The format of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette has changed from three columns to one; but the mission is still the same: to inform and entertain you with good writing and brazen sexuality.

How’s everyone doing?

Love Doctor

The Old Soldier is doing great.  It’s around 4:00 in the afternoon on a lovely summer-like day of warm breezes and sunshine in the City of Pittsburgh and I have taken up my favorite position stretched out on the sofa with two fat pillows under my weary head as I sip on a can of beer and jot in my notebook (then I got up and sat at the workstation to post this).

If the Old Soldier was to break down the major editorial subjects of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, the list might look something like this.

  1. Flash Fiction
  2. Current Events
  3. Baby Boomers
  4. Female Sexology
  5. Blogging
  6. Writing
  7. Writers
  8. Karaoke
  9. Poetry
  10. Life

That’s a hell of a list.  I didn’t mean for the PFFG to turn out that way.  It just kind of happened.

Karaoke And The Orgasmic Power Of Flash Fiction

You know what an analogy is, don’t you?  It’s when one thing is compared to another thing to make a point.

The Old Soldier wants to compare an orgasm to the flash fiction short story.

No, the Old Soldier has not had too much to drink, just enough to drink to make this work.  I think.

Flash fiction is not about foreplay.  Flash fiction is about presenting a significant event in as few words as possible.

Or think of flash fiction this way.  A woman likes a man.  Maybe she loves this man.  She is definitely hot for this man.  But they don’t have much time.

So, he says to her: Honey, just lay back on these pillows and I’ll cum in your mouth and then I’ll eat and finger you to orgasm.  Then we got to get the hell out of here.

A lot of women would go for that.

That’s what flash fiction is like.

It’s Friday night my brothers and sisters.  The Old Soldier will be at Del’s in Bloomfield.  I think I might start off with Bob Seeger’s Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man and the Wind of Change by the Scorpions.

After that, who knows?

This is the Old Soldier blogging and rockin’ out in Pittsburgh.
