Why Is The PFF Gazette Covering The Adult Industry?

Brianna Frost Hogan

The porn industry is big news.  It is larger than the movie and the music industries combined.  In the United States it entices thousands of women every day to be filmed or taped having sex.  That to me is news.

And then there is the age-old argument of whether or not porn can ever be art.  Well, it obviously is entertainment.

As the editor, publisher of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, I want to cover not only the things that everyone else covers but also the things that they do not cover.  That brings in readers.  I only cover the amateurs, the women who are doing their first on up to around their fifth porn video.  They are not acting.

But I want to cover porn as a legitimate form of entertainment.  Many, many millions of men and women in the United States buy and watch porn.  As an older, heterosexual male I’m trying to get my mind around why so many attractive, articulate and in many cases  well-educated young  (and not so young women) volunteer to have their bodies ravished on camera.  And there are two things that I have found out: they do not feel they are being ravished but are giving as good as they get; or, they like being ravished.  What other publication will offer that insight to you?

A 29-Year-Old-Unmarried Woman With No Boyfriend Does Her First Porn Video

By the way, my niece Brianna Frost Hogan is a well-know webcam stripper who performs sex acts on herself and has recently begun to perform fellatio on her own website.  She makes a lot of money from thousands of subscribers.  Last time I checked it was $20.00 a subscription.  That’s $20.00 every month per subscription.  I’m only guessing but I figure she has thousands of subscribers.  Young women in porn on the internet is not an abstraction to me.

Isn’t it time we admit to ourselves that we (or at least millions upon millions of us) like porn?

Once again, this magazine is definitely not for everyone.  But maybe it’s just right for you.

What Do Finances Have To Do With Writing Success?

Writing success has a great deal to do with a writer’s finances.  It took the Old Soldier years to figure this out.

99.9% of writers will never make a living from their writing.  I’m sorry to be the one to tell you but I know you expect the truth from the Old Soldier.  If that discourages you, then maybe writing is not for you.

If you write not because you want to but because you have to, then there is hope that you can find a level of writing success that will make you happy.  If you are one of the talented and very lucky writers that start making money from their writing right away, you don’t need any advice from me.

If you are like me, trying to find a certain level of success, then the first thing you need to do is to get a job that you can tolerate, that pays your bills and that allows you time in your life to write.

Even though the Old Soldier won a writing fellowship in 2003 that was worth at least $60,000, his writing over the years has made only several hundred dollars.  Certainly not enough money to live on.  And the Old Soldier has been writing seriously his entire adult life.

It is only now at the age of 64 that social security, a military pension and a pension from Giant Eagle puts me in a position where I don’t have to worry about making a living so that I can concentrate on being a full-time blogger.

And what is writing success for me?  At least 100 visits to my blog every day.

Writing: Start With Two People

Both Sides of the Story

Image via Wikipedia

Here’s a flash fiction writing tip that you may find useful.  You know the old saying that there are two sides to a coin or there are two sides to every story.  Those two sayings have a lot of truth in them, especially for the flash fiction writer.

Every story is about resolving some issue.  The most basic situation is an issue between two people.  And since the flash fiction story is so short, a writer really only has room to fully bring to life about two people.  I’m not saying that a writer should limit his or her story to two characters.  I’m just saying that you can tell both sides of a story through just two people.

See what I mean?

I hope this writing tip helps.  There are a lot more tips on this blog.  Feel free to explore.

This is the Old Soldier blogging near the University of Pittsburgh.
