Family, Friends And The Flash Fiction Writer

A writer is never off duty.  Even when a writer lives in the moment, once the moment passes the writer must sooner or later reflect on his or her day.  The day might contain something that can be used in a short story.

Earlier today, I walked to Armand’s in Little Italy for a beer.  This was before noon.  Only two other customers sat at the bar as they watched television.  My new friend, the painter of fine art, was not there.  He’s around my age and he has always made a living as a painter of fine art.  He’s not rich, but he makes a living.  I admire anyone who makes a living at his or her art.

And he’s a good conversationalist.

But today he was not at Armand’s.  So, I finished my beer and enjoyed my walk in this beautiful summer-like weather Pittsburgh is having, back to my apartment.

After eating a sardine sandwich with onions and mustard on pumpernickel bread and washing it all down with some sweet tea, I read a little of one of my books that I checked out from the public library a few days ago.

Then it was time for another walk to visit my younger brother who lives in an assistant-living facility.  He’s younger than I am but he uses a cane and looks and acts much older.  He never goes anywhere.  He has plenty of money.  He usually slips me a few bucks when I visit him.  But he has lost his interest in life.

Over the years, I’ve written two flash fiction stories about him.

The Importance Of Characterization In Erotic Flash Fiction

Woman As Art

When the Old Soldier talks about erotic flash fiction, he is speaking about literary erotica in the tradition of Fanny Hill, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Lolita, The Story of O and other fiction that deals with sex.  The sex if often explicit.

Still, all of the erotic novels that I’ve mentioned are now considered art.  You see my point?  When writing about sex is good enough it is art.

A writer who writes flash fiction with explicit sex in it, if he or she is serious about the craft of writing and has talent, he or she is an artist.

Characterization is the essence of the art of the best erotic flash fiction, no matter how explicit the sex is.

And conflict or doubt is the essence of good characterization, whether you are writing a play, a novel, a short story or a very short story.  There is the conflict of person against person, person against nature or situation and person against self (doubt).

So, when you write your sexy flash fiction story, don’t forget the conflict or doubt, even when a man or a woman is having his or her brains fucked out.  And by the end of the story the conflict or doubt has been resolved.

But there is usually an exception to most rules.  If your short narrative is representative of a relationship or a situation without conflict or doubt, that can be a short story (as opposed to a sketch or vignette), too.

Art And The Erotic Flash Fiction Story

True art takes the human mind on a journey of discovery.  This is also the goal of the serious flash fiction writer who writes a story that has sex in it; for this writer understands that sex is never just about sex.

I’m speaking about writers who understand that an erotic flash fiction story can be more than just good entertainment.  If the story is good enough, it can be art, too.

Such a story can take a reader on a journey that in some way adds to the reader’s understanding of what it means to be human, that sex does not take place in a vacuum, that the best stories about sex are really not about sex at all.

The best erotic stories are really about relationships.  They’re really about life.

Sometimes sex is a celebration of love, one of the most transformative acts that we know of.

But whether the journey is about love or just about pleasure, in the hands of a serious writer, the erotic flash fiction short story is always a journey of psychic discovery.
