Several Flash Fiction Stories Equal A Book

Still trying to pound out that novel?  And even if you do finish your novel, do you know what the chances are of getting it published?

Of course, now a days we can all publish ourselves; but if a novel just seems too damn long, why don’t you gather up all your flash fiction stories and put them in a book?

And here’s an idea that will help to give your collection of flash fiction stories the feel of a novel.  Have one character or the same group of characters show up in several of the stories in the book.

That’s what I did.

Pittsburgh Is My Paris

Pittsburgh Is My Paris

Hello, I’m the Old Soldier blogging away in Pittsburgh on this overcast, warm Spring afternoon.

In 2005, I published my one and probably only paperback book of fiction.  It’s also an ebook.  The ebook (the tab is at the top of the page) is available from this blog.  The book is made up of 31 flash fiction stories and one short novel.  My point is that you can create a pretty unified book from a collection of flash fiction stories if you do it the right way.

It worked for me.  Maybe it could work for you.

Orange Crush, Cooked Salami And Spring In Little Italy

The Old Soldier was on duty at 6:00 a.m.  I did some blogging and then hit the streets to do some food shopping.

I’ve been eating the ham and lima beans that I cooked in my crock pot for several days now.  So, I wanted a change.  I had everything I needed to make sandwiches except for the lunch meat.

I walked through Little Italy.  It was around 8:30 a.m.  The day was sunny and warm already.  Not many people out.  I’m retired and I have to remind myself that most people are at work.

As usual, my writer’s sensibilities were absorbing as much as they could.  Even though I walked through the business district, most of the businesses had not opened yet.

But the supermarket was open.

I bought a plastic bottle of Cherry Pepsi and a plastic bottle of Orange Crush, a box of boil-in-the-bag enriched rich and a pound of cooked salami.

Then I had a pleasant walk back to my apartment and I was ready to get back to work.

Submissions: How To Write Great Erotica

Sex sales.  Sex can get you published.  Sex can earn you a few dollars.

The Old Soldier knows what he’s talking about.  Just take a look around this blog.

Writers use to submit work with lots of sex in it.  And that was all that was in it.  Ladies and gentlemen, a sex act is not a short story.  It’s just a sex act.

And since this blog is about writing flash fiction, I would send those sex acts back to the writers with a sentence or two about why the work was not for this publication: “There is no story here.”

What did I mean by story?

What is the importance of the sex?  What impact does it have on the lives of the characters having sex?  What’s the background of the characters and is there some hint as to what will happen to the characters after the sex is over?

If you want to write great erotica, keep this thought in mind: The best erotica is not about sex; it’s about relationships.

This is the Old Soldier blogging near the University of Pittsburgh.
