Black Beans, Ham Hocks, Carrots And The Eurozone

The Old Soldier broke out the crock pot a few days ago and cooked up a mess of black beans.  It was a first.  I soaked the beans overnight.  Then I threw them in the crock pot with three fat ham hocks and a cut up carrot.  This time I did not make the mistake of putting in too much water like I did with my last crock pot of black eye peas.

The black beans turned out great even though the clean up was messy.  The black beans shed their coloring.  The color baked itself on the inside of the crock pot and some got on the side of the refrigerator.

But now I have a hearty meal that will last me for several days.

How’s everyone doing?

It will be a cloudy day in Pittsburgh, the high around 40; mild for February.  I’ve been paying closer attention to the Nightly Business Report on public television.  The show has been covering the possibility of a Greek default.

I am not an expert on high finance.  I do know that the international monetary system is so integrated that a default by Greece could have a real effect on me and you.  If Greece goes the entire Eurozone could go and the possibility of a world-wide Great Depression, much worst than the one in 1929, could be upon us.

Cooking Kidney Beans

High Resolution Image of Kidney Beans.

I like cooking.  I like easy to prepare, tasty and healthy meals.  The Old Soldier is on a meatless-meal kick.  I don’t know how long this meatless kick will last, but I’m going to enjoy it while it does last.  Not that I’m a vegetarian.  I could never be a vegetarian.  But it seems that the less meat you eat the better.

I have several large cans of kidney beans in my apartment.  I bought them to make chilli.  I love spicy chilli.  It goes great with cold beer.  But one day I got lazy and didn’t want to make chilli with ground beef, onions, green peppers, tomato sauce and chilli powder.

I wondered what the kidney beans would taste like by themselves in the liquid that they are canned with.  I emptied a can into the crock pot and four hours later I ate a bowl of kidney beans with just hot sauce.  It was delicious.

So, I’m going to try it again.  But this time I’ll add diced carrots, onions and green peppers.

Food does not have to be complicated to taste good and to be good for you…

Don’t Let The Rain Stop You

Yes, it’s an overcast, rainy day in Pittsburgh, but since the Steelers won on Sunday the rain is a good, happy rain.

A rainy day is also a good day for blogging.  I still have several chicken legs and some carrots left over from my crock pot cooking over the weekend.

I haven’t written a new flash fiction story in some time.  I’ve just been blogging.  Being retired has given me the time to blog full-time.  And since I make a little bit of money every day from Yahoo ads, I guess that makes me a professional blogger.  But if it wasn’t for my social security and a small pension, I would starve to death.
