The City of Pittsburgh got pounded last night.  The Old Soldier woke up to a winter wonderland.  Around three inches fell last night.  The city may get another inch today.

Coming Attractions For April

April is about one week away.  My publishing schedule is behind schedule, but I’m going to catch up in April.  One or two things that I wanted to publish in March I will now publish in April which means we can look forward to several flash fiction stories and several poems from some talented contributing writers next month.

Lindsay Lohan

Poor Lindsay.  Our girl needs help.  The medical community has told us that alcoholism is a sickness which means Lindsay is sick.  How many people really think that 90 days in rehab is going to make her see the light?

I certainly don’t.

She’s already been in rehab twice.  And she keeps drinking.

There are even reports in the entertainment media that she’s been offered a lucrative contract for a possible reality show once she gets out of rehab.  Of course, she could still be sent to jail.  Maybe jail would make her realize that she has a problem that may eventually kill her.  Has the death of Amy Winehouse taught her nothing?

When our celebrities act-out their issues so publicly, we love them even more because trouble makes them seem more like us.

New: A Story From The Archives Every Sunday

Spring is considered a time of rebirth.  And as spring comes to the City of Pittsburgh, a rebirth is taking place at the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.

“The Sunday Flash Fiction Story” series is being reborn.

Every Sunday, without fanfare, the Old Soldier will go into the archives of this blog, find a story and stick it to the front page to be replaced by another story from the archives the following Sunday.

You know, sort of like the changing of the guard.

Sometimes the replacement story will be one of my old stories and sometimes it will be a story by another writer.  Sometimes the story will be about sexuality and sometimes it won’t be about sexuality.

The first story of the reborn series is on the front page right now.  Be sure to check it out.

Writers: People Who Need People

It’s a lovely spring day in the City of Pittsburgh.  The Old Soldier went for a nice walk to visit his brother.  It was sunny and mild, around 42 degrees.

My brother lives in an assisted-living facility.  I’m five years older than he is and every time I visit him I realize how lucky I am to have my health.  He has over $15,000 in the bank because he doesn’t do anything or go anywhere and the money keeps building up.  He has few visitors.

He was happy to see me.

People Who Need People

Then I marched back home, turned on the radio, put some vanilla cookies with creme in the middle on the low table next to the sofa and took up my favorite position: on my back on the sofa with two fat pillows under my weary head.

Outside, the sun was still shinning and I started to read my new book from the library, The Soldier Kings, The House Of Hohenzollern by Walter Henry Nelson.

The Old Soldier was all caught up in the book when “People” by Barbara Streisand floated over from the radio.  I haven’t heard that song in years.

One line of the song goes, “People, people who need people, are the luckiest people in the world.”

It just made me think of how we writers would be lost without our readers.
