Still Reading About The Vietnam War

Ken Burns, Documentary filmmaker

It’s around 4:00 PM.  Outside it’s still overcast in the 40s.  The Old Soldier has the baseball game on the radio.  Otherwise the apartment building and the city are pretty quiet.

It’s time to take a short break from tweeting and blogging.  There’s green tea in the refrigerator and a fresh load of laundry waits in the bedroom on the bed to be folded or put on hangers.

But before I do anything else I’m going to stretch out on the sofa with a couple of pillows and sip some tea and listen to the ball game and read a little of my favorite history of the Vietnam War.

The third installment of Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary film will be on the telly later tonight.

Writing: The World According To Flash Fiction

Cover of "Death Wish"

The world is so vast and a flash fiction story is so small.  Still, the flash fiction writer can capture the entire world in his or her fiction.  The writer just has to do it 1,000 words at a time.

As I write this there is civil war in Libya, an earth quake and tsunami in Japan and unions for public workers in the United States are under attack.  All these events can form the backdrop for the lives of the characters of flash fiction just like they are the backdrop for the life of the flash fiction writer.

Flash fiction is the world.

I’m watching retro tv in Pittsburgh.  A movie with Charles Bronson is on.  I did not see the opening credits of the movie but it must be one of the movies in the Death Wish series.  Charles Bronson is the protagonist.  His housekeeper and daughter were raped and killed by a gang of street thugs.  He is a good man; but has become a vigilante and spends the movie hunting down and killing the thugs.

The character Bronson plays is a perfect example of a very flawed protagonist, a flawed protagonist whose actions may be legally wrong but whose actions are understandable.

Years ago, the Death Wish serious was very, very popular.

Movie Review: Gone With The Wind

David O. Selznick’s production of Margaret Michell’s Pulitzer Prize winner Gone With The Wind is considered by many to be the best movie ever made.  Starring Vivien Leigh as Scarlett  and Clarke Gable as Rhett, this sweeping drama of the Old South during the Civil War period has been entertaining generations of movie goers.

The film was released in 1938.  When the filmed was given a special screening in Pittsburgh not too long ago, it stayed for six months.  This is a must see movie for all film buffs…

The Old Soldier is doing some random blogging this afternoon.  Car racing is on the television.  The day is warm but overcast.  Went for a nice long walk through the park down by the University of Pittsburgh.  Now I’m going to simmer some diced green peppers and and cook some scrambled eggs and have a cup of orange juice…

Without a doubt, the June 18, 2009 posting of “Why Women Enjoy Getting Oral Sex” has been the most popular posting since it was published.

Writers are welcome to check out all of the articles on writing in the sidebar on the right under “More Flash Articles”.

Readers will find very short stories about karaoke, blogging, war, friendship, marriage, sexuality, love and life in the sidebar on the right under, “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read”.

Happy Father’s Day and enjoy the rest of the afternoon.
