Writing: Mastering The Tools

For the serious writer, mastering the tools of writing is a life time goal.  It has to be.

Aspiring writers sometimes have the feeling that passion will sustain them and give their writing value.  I agree that passion can give heat to your writing, but it cannot give clarity, insight and control.  For these things a writer needs control of written language.  One way to get control of written language is to read good writers and to learn correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and the exact meaning of words.

An interesting thing happens to a writer who is constantly working to master the tools of writing.  The writer is able to think more clearly and understands better what words can do and how to get them to do these things.

A writer must understand the basics of writing.

Writing: The Ebb And Flow Of Life

I’ve always felt that writing, no matter what kind of writing, celebrated the ebb and flow of life.

Without writing, modern society could not function.  With the invention of writing, humankind solidified its position as the dominant life form on earth.  No other creatures, as far as we know, can write.  They sure can communicate, but they don’t write.  The ability to write is unique.

Writing separates us from the beasts and helps to make us human.  And if you are a flash fiction writer, be proud to be a flash fiction writer.

Clarity Is The Best Policy

What is clarity?  This is what my dictionary says clarity is: state or quality of being clear, esp. of sound or expression…

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers and writers.  It’s the Old Soldier here with another issue of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.

Have you ever read something and then wondered what in the hell the writer is writing about.  I’m not talking about writing that is open to interpretation.  I’m talking about writing that makes no sense.  It’s as if the writer has his or her own language and has not bothered to learn how to communicate clearly with the reader.

Now I know none of you are like that because when you write something you go over it several times knowing that what you have written must not only make sense to you but it must make sense to someone else.

Making sense to someone else is what clarity is all about…
