How To Write Better Dialogue: Making The Internal External

Woman As Art

Just like real people in real life, characters in a flash fiction short story reveal a lot about themselves when they talk.  Or, at least they should.  In the best flash fiction they do.

There is a good reason that dialogue is called dialogue.  Dialogue is not just talk.  Dialogue is a tool that a writer uses to reveal character, attitude, social class, background, education and all sorts of things that the writer would otherwise have to explain to the reader.

Good dialogue allows the reader to make up his or her mind about a character.  Because just like in real life, we judge characters by what they say and we match what they say against what they do.

So, pay close attention to what your characters say.  The reader is judging them.

Dialogue can make the internal external.

Hello, fans of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette in Europe.  The Old Soldier awoke to the good news that the citizens of Greece voted in the party that wants to stay in the Eurozone; but that party still has to put together a government.

And there was the news that Spain is going to ask for help with its banking system.

How long can this go on?

The people in the circles that I move in don’t seem to be paying much attention to the financial crisis in Europe.  Of course, I’m working-class and retired; I live on social security and two pensions.  Still, if things go south in Europe I’m sure that it will impact not only me but millions of other Americans, too.

It’s an overcast, warm afternoon in Pittsburgh.  Well, the Old Soldier has spent his fun money for the month of June so there will not be anymore karaoke until the first Friday of July; but that’s okay.  The Old Soldier has never been good at living within a budget.  I do have a system though that works within my limitations.

The first week of every month, when I get my social security and two pension checks, I pay all my bills.  Then whatever is left over I spend it just like I want to.  It’s not a perfect system but it works for the Old Soldier: two weeks of fiesta and then two weeks of abstinence.

Bloggers, We Are The True Media Of The People

Woman As Art

If you are a blogger, take a moment to pat yourself on the back.  It doesn’t matter at what level of blogging expertise you are at or how many hits you get every day.  The important thing is you’re in the game.

And what game is that?

The alternative media game.  You’re connected.  You’re not sitting on the shore.  You’re sitting on a lily pad smack dab in the middle of a communications revolution that has changed the world.  Be proud of the label “blogger”.

Bloggers, the Old Soldier salutes you!

Hello, world!

The Old Soldier did not have a good time at karaoke at Del’s last night.  For some insane reason management decided to hold karaoke outside on the side deck in the parking lot.  It was a warm, beautiful night to be outside; but not for karaoke.  You know, loud music outside at 10:30 p.m.

Well, I know why management did it.  It was to drum up more business.  But when you hold karaoke outside the sound dissipates and the neighbors don’t like it.

Someone called the police on us and we all ended up back inside in the bar where we should have been in the first place.

The financial markets are holding their breath over the outcome of the elections in Greece that are to take place Sunday.  My friends, we are on a slippery slope.  There are reports in the mainstream media that Greek citizens are taking their money out of the banks.

The last thing the global economy needs is a run on the banks.  Pay attention to whether or not citizens in other countries in Europe begin taking many out of their banks.

This is no joke.  A collapse of the Eurozone will affect all of us.

The Old Soldier has several pieces of chicken in the crock pot seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder and basil leaves.  I’m going to visit my younger brother in the assistant living facility where he lives and by the time I get back dinner will be ready.

Notes From The Flash Fiction Underground/June 15, 2012

Woman As Art

Will Greece leave the Eurozone?  Will Spain and Italy default on their loans?  The Old Soldier is working-class and retired, but these are not idle questions for me or other Americans.

The global banking system is so tightly integrated that a European financial collapse will have a definite negative impact on the US.  How much of an impact?  Nobody knows.

Keep your eyes on the situation.

Hello, all my fans in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and North and South America.  Enough of this gloom and doom.

It’s Friday and you know what that means.  The Old Soldier will be presenting his performance art (karaoke) at Del’s in Bloomfield (Pittsburgh’s Little Italy) tonight.

Karaoke gets the Old Soldier out of the house.

And I tell you what else will be getting the Old Soldier out of the house: The Big Idea Bookstore.  It’s just a few blocks from my apartment.  I’ve decided to become more involved in the store since it is carrying my only published book and because it is a cooperative which means it is owned by the workers.

The store is very involved with the community.  It shows low-budget films.  It has readings and it’s a cafe, too.  The Old Soldier has found another place to hang out.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

Black Beans, Ham Hocks, Carrots And The Eurozone

The Old Soldier broke out the crock pot a few days ago and cooked up a mess of black beans.  It was a first.  I soaked the beans overnight.  Then I threw them in the crock pot with three fat ham hocks and a cut up carrot.  This time I did not make the mistake of putting in too much water like I did with my last crock pot of black eye peas.

The black beans turned out great even though the clean up was messy.  The black beans shed their coloring.  The color baked itself on the inside of the crock pot and some got on the side of the refrigerator.

But now I have a hearty meal that will last me for several days.

How’s everyone doing?

It will be a cloudy day in Pittsburgh, the high around 40; mild for February.  I’ve been paying closer attention to the Nightly Business Report on public television.  The show has been covering the possibility of a Greek default.

I am not an expert on high finance.  I do know that the international monetary system is so integrated that a default by Greece could have a real effect on me and you.  If Greece goes the entire Eurozone could go and the possibility of a world-wide Great Depression, much worst than the one in 1929, could be upon us.
