Writing The Flash Fiction Novel

The Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald

A flash fiction novel may seem like an oxymoron but a series of flash fiction stories can make for a great novel.

Hello, baby boomers, bloggers, Pitt students, creative writers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics.  The idea of writing several full length short stories and stringing them together to form a novel is nothing new.  This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first novel, was really a bunch of his short stories that he strung together.  Doing the same thing with several flash fiction stories is relatively new, or at least not as common.

Every chapter can be a flash fiction story, each chapter capturing a significant moment in time for one or more characters who move through the entire novel so that by the end of the book a full novel-length story has been told.

So, if you’ve been trying to write that novel try writing it one flash fiction story at a time.
