The Old Soldier cannot imagine a writer who does not like to read. But a writer should not read like other readers. Sure, the writer reads to be entertained and informed like any other reader; but after reading for entertainment and for information the writer should read with a critical eye.
If what the writer reads is well written, the writer learns more about what works in writing. If what the writer reads is poorly written, the writer learns what does not work.
This is how a writer should read.

Writing: Are You In The Zone?

There is a certain state of mind that seems to help writers to write better.
Hello, my brother and sister bloggers and writers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics. It took the Old Soldier years to get into the proper writing state of mind and to be able to stay there for much of the working day.
That writing state of mind is just a heightened awareness that everything you do, everything you say, everything you see and everything you think can be used in your fiction. It is the awareness that life is the fertile soil that the seeds of your fiction must grow in.
It is a state of mind that allows the imagination of the writer to transform reality into art.
This awareness is not something that the writer floats in and out of. It is an awareness that is conscious and continuous and it takes practice. So that after so many years of practice it becomes the natural state of mind of the person who uses words to capture life on the page.
