Unfinished Empire, The Global Expansion of Britain by John Darwin is 478 pages long.  I’m only on page 100; and I’m really looking forward to finishing this book.

Hello hello hello, my brother and sister readers and writers from all over the world!  And here’s a special shout-out to my fans in the UK.

The Old Soldier was at the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh (the public library) a couple of days ago and he picked up this book by John Darwin.

All I can tell you is that if you enjoy well researched history written in tight prose that is easy for the general public to enjoy, this is the book for you.

Of course, when I read anything, I read to see what I can learn and use as a blogger, an editor, a publisher and as a writer.

The Old Soldier can tell you he is going to learn a great many useful things from this book.

The New Submission Guidelines Are Finalized

Woman As Art

Woman As Art

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette receives more unsolicited, publishable submissions than it can absorb; but our editorial policy is still to showcase writing talent from all over the world.

The next reading period for unsolicited submissions will run from 1 July 2013 to 31 July 2013.  A writer is allowed only one short story submission each reading period.  Each new reading period will be announced in advance.

Once a writer has a story accepted for publication, that writer may submit another story as soon as the previous story is published.

Poets may submit up to three poems in the same email during a reading period.

Orange Crush, Cooked Salami And Spring In Little Italy

The Old Soldier was on duty at 6:00 a.m.  I did some blogging and then hit the streets to do some food shopping.

I’ve been eating the ham and lima beans that I cooked in my crock pot for several days now.  So, I wanted a change.  I had everything I needed to make sandwiches except for the lunch meat.

I walked through Little Italy.  It was around 8:30 a.m.  The day was sunny and warm already.  Not many people out.  I’m retired and I have to remind myself that most people are at work.

As usual, my writer’s sensibilities were absorbing as much as they could.  Even though I walked through the business district, most of the businesses had not opened yet.

But the supermarket was open.

I bought a plastic bottle of Cherry Pepsi and a plastic bottle of Orange Crush, a box of boil-in-the-bag enriched rich and a pound of cooked salami.

Then I had a pleasant walk back to my apartment and I was ready to get back to work.
