Pittsburgh Braces For Hurricane Sandy

The local mainstream media is full of stories about the impact that the winds and rain will have on the nation and on the Pittsburgh area.

Today the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette has gotten over 100 hits from Germany.  Maybe it got all these hits from Germany because of the “Guest Writers” series or the “Woman As Art” series.

Maybe it’s because of “The Sunday Flash Fiction Story” series.

Woman As Art

Maybe it’s the insights on building a better blog.  Or maybe it’s the intelligent discussion of why the idea of being in an online adult video is becoming more and more attractive to more and more women who otherwise have no intentions of making a career in the adult industry.

Whatever the reason, here at the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette you will find serious writing and brazen sexuality in the same online magazine.

Flash Fiction Works Because It Is So Short

Some writers don’t like to write flash fiction because it’s too short.  But in the case of flash fiction short is good.

Flash fiction is not meant to tell the entire story.  It’s meant to tell a revealing piece of the entire story.  It is meant to capture a meaningful tiny piece of the story that sheds light on the bigger story.

Flash flash is a defining moment in the larger story.

Think of flash fiction as a sample.  You walk up to the meat counter in a store.  You want to buy some meat for sandwiches.  There are all kinds of cold cuts behind the glass.  You can’t decide which lunch meat to get: ham, bologna, salami…

The clerk says, “Try this,” and hands you a slice of corn beef.

“Yes,” you say after eating your slice of corn beef.  “I’ll take a pound of corn beef.”

In other words, one slice of meat is not enough to make a sandwich, but it can give you a pretty good idea of what your sandwich will taste like.

Flash fiction works because it is so short.

Do You Have Writer’s Block? Stop Thinking About Writing

When a writer hits a wall and there is simply no way that anything useful is going to get done, sometimes the best thing to do is to stop thinking about writing.  That’s right.  Get up from your workstation or wherever you do your writing and do something else.

The Old Soldier got the idea for this post by taking a nice long walk.  I just got back.  I wasn’t thinking about writing.  I was just enjoying the warm sun and the foot and vehicle traffic, the trees and lawns, the bicyclists and the joggers and the mansions that were built in the early 1900s and that are now private homes.

Sometimes I feel like Nick in The Great Gatsby, living in a cheap apartment next to the homes of millionaires.

And that’s how I got the idea for this post.

Well, it’s around 4:00 in the afternoon and the Old Soldier has accomplished a lot: three posts, breathing and stretching exercises, a little housekeeping, the breakfast dishes are done, I tried to call the Matriarch but got no answer, took a shower and shaved my head and went for a long walk.

Now I’m going to post this, do a load of laundry, do a little reading, watch the evening news and then get ready for karaoke.

Keep reading and keep writing that flash fiction.
