Writing Tip: The Less Backstory The Better

That is probably the best advice that the Old Soldier can give to anyone who wants to write flash fiction, “The less backstory the better.”  This piece of advice forces the writer to get out of the way of the story, to let the characters act out the story.

The writer of flash fiction simply does not have the luxury of explaining in any length what characters are feeling and thinking and what their history was or what lead up to the beginning of the story.

The less backstory the better.

Are you serious about writing flash fiction?  I mean really serious?  If the answer is yes, then I have an Ebook written just for you.

Hello, flash fiction readers and flash fiction writers.  In 2005 the Old Soldier published The Pittsburgh Stories (Including the novella: In The Garden Of Love).  The book was based on a sampling of flash fiction stories that I submitted to the graduate writing program of the University of Pittsburgh in 2002.

Not only was I accepted to the program but I was also awarded a K. LeRoy Irvis Fellowship that paid for all three years of my schooling along with a monthly stipend of over $900 for the entire three years.

That’s how much the University of Pittsburgh thought of the flash fiction stories that I submitted.  Those stories and many more along with a short novel are in the Ebook that is now available to the readers of this blog.

The Ebook is not free; but if you can spare $6.00 and you want to learn from the best, download your copy today.  Be sure to save the file.  The link is at the top of the page.

Yes, the Old Soldier has been spending his days streaming on Twitter, trying to make a few dollars.

Hello, bloggers, readers and writers.  I’m sitting at my workstation blogging this post while Canned Heat jams on the retro-music television station.  Tweeting so much is taking me away from blogging.  I have not found a good balance yet.

You can read all about it here: Twitter: Your Followers And Your Triond Page Views.

So be patient with the Old Soldiers.  It’s just one of the transitional phrases in life that we all go through.  Enjoy the articles on blogging and writing and the commentaries and the great flash fiction while I work out a schedule that will allow me to give more attention to the most dynamic flash fiction blog on the Internet.
