Hello hello hello, my brother and sister bloggers, writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics. Welcome to another edition of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is my favorite protagonist. Why?
Because the man has issues. He is very conflicted. Because of a war wound, he cannot have sex with the woman he loves. Ouch!
Throughout the novel, Jake struggles to live life as best he can with his war wound. His struggle makes for some heartbreaking and riveting reading.
The point is, when you build a protagonist make sure he or she has some internal conflict. Everyone else in your story can be convinced of their position, but your protagonist has to have doubt.
