A New Online Magazine For Fiction Writers

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette has been two and a half years in the making.  It has evolved from being little more than a personal journal to a dynamic publication of many interests.  In the publication, a reader will find everything from commentaries on world news events to flash fiction stories, poetry, photos of female nudes and YouTube music videos of retro-rock.

There are also concise articles on blogging and writing and an Ebook written for readers and writers who want to learn to write flash fiction and who want to read some of the best “show don’t tell” fiction ever put together in one collection.

And the evolution will continue in an effort to inform and entertain an ever-growing online readership.

Writing: Get Out Of The Way

Some of the best advice that I can give to a flash fiction writer is: get out of the way.

That’s right.  Get out of the way and let your characters act out the story.  Which means once the introduction is over, the writer has to let the characters inter-act.  And when characters inter-act they will reveal everything the reader needs to know about what is going on and who is naughty and who is nice.

In other words, don’t do a lot of explaining.

Are you keeping that journal that I mentioned in another post?  You know, something to write down the details of living your life?  You would be surprised how much that stuff comes in handy for writing flash fiction.

Writing flash fiction is like capturing life 800 words at a time.

Try Keeping A Small Notebook In Your Pocket

Some writers keep an e-journal or a paper journal.  The journal is full of tidbits and ideas.  This doesn’t work for me.  What does work for me is a little notebook that fits in the back pocket of my jeans.  And I always carry around two ink pens.

Then I go about life and forget the notebook.  But when something happens and the idea for a short story pops up the notebook comes out.  Usually, I try to come up with a title that captures the idea so that I have a direction to work in.  Or if I’m lucky, the writing down of several titles about a “single” flash fiction idea will cause me to start writing until the first draft of a story is completed.

This method of keeping a little notebook in a pocket and something to write with may work for you.

Many of the stories in the sidebar on the right under “Great American Flash Fiction Stories To Read” were created this way.
