It’s around 1:00 PM on a chilly, bright day in Pittsburgh and the Old Soldier is at Del’s Bar & Italian Restaurant having a couple of draft beers at the bar.  Amy is behind the bar.  She’s a working archeologist.  She works out of the Carnegie Museum in my neighborhood of Oakland where the University of Pittsburgh is located.

The Old Soldier will leave here soon and get back to his apartment to put on a crock pot of chili con carne.

First brown the ground beef, chop it up, then throw it into the crock pot of diced green peppers, tomato sauce, cooked rice, kidney beans with plenty of chili powder, salt and pepper and a couple of small hot peppers.  It will last a week.

You can’t beat it with a stick.

Cooking: Kidney Beans, Ground Beef And A Green Pepper

Raw Ground beef

Yes, the Old Soldier is trying something new.  A few days ago I opened a large can of kidney beans, threw that in the crock pot along with tomato sauce, some browned, chopped up ground beef and a diced green pepper.  Covered everything with a healthy dose of garlic power, black pepper and chili powder and then let it all cook for five hours.

It was a simple, good meal for a chilly week in October in Pittsburgh.  I poured in a good dose of hot sauce and I’m going to have another bowl today as soon as I come back from Del’s Bar and Italian restaurant.

Cooking: Kidney Beans And Smoked Turkey

The Old Soldier’s commitment to go vegetarian lasted about two days.  Why?

I went to the supermarket and got a carrot, an onion and a red pepper.  I was already to check out when I spied a package of smoked turkey.  I battled with myself.  In the end I got the smoked turkey. It had about eight pieces in the package, most of them smaller than my fist.

Feeling guilty, I walked back to my apartment, diced up the onion, red pepper, carrot and opened a large can of kidney beans that I had in the apartment.  Then I threw the vegetables and the smoked turkey into my crock pot.  I added lots of black pepper.  I used the liquid of the kidney beans and a cup of water to add moisture.

Four hours later I had a delicious bowl of…of what?  Whatever it was, it was delicious.  I added a little hot sauce.  Let’s call the meal, smoked turkey kidney bean stew.  This is good food for any flash fiction writer…
