Writing: Stay The Course

So far today it has been a sunny, chilly 40-something degrees in Pittsburgh.  Since my computer is doing a security scan, which usually takes hours, I may get up only two or three posts today.  Whenever a security scan takes place, my computer is so slow that I just stop blogging and wait until the scan is over.

But if the Old Soldier can leave you with one thought for today about writing, it is stay the course.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: writing is a journey not a destination.

The main thing that separates writers from wanna-be writers is perseverance.  Writers have it; wanna-bes don’t.

The more you write (and the more you read) the more you learn about writing.  It’s that simple.

Keep reading (especially the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette) and keep writing.  The Submissions tab is at the top of the page.

Writers As Messengers From The Underground

The Oxford Book of English Short Stories

Call me a romantic, but I have always thought of short story writers as messengers, bringing to light the deepest fears and hopes of men and women.

Short story writers make us stop and reflect on the world we live in and to learn about that world so that we will be wiser about life.

You will find this kind of writing in the flash fiction on this blog.  And you will find articles that will help you to write this kind of flash fiction, too.

Enjoy the stories.  Read the articles.  Check out the submissions guidelines at the top of the page and send me something.

Keep reading and keep writing.

Writing: The Most Important Trait For Success

Success (The Posies album)

What would you say is the most important trait that a writer should have for success?  If you said perseverance, the Old Soldier agrees with you.

It takes time for a writer to learn enough about the craft of writing to reach any level of success.  The Old Soldier got rejection notices throughout his 20s, 30s and 40s until in his 50s a local newspaper weekly published every flash fiction story and every article about writing that he submitted and the University of Pittsburgh awarded him a writing fellowship to the graduate program that was worth more than $60,000.

True story.
