Flash Fiction Rule #1

For those of you interested in writing flash fiction, this suggestion will definitely help.

Hello, Pitt Panthers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics.  How many of you are writers?  How many of you who are writers have thought about writing flash fiction.  Well, as you can see there are all kinds of flash fiction stories on this blog.  There are love stories, stories about husbands and wives and boyfriends and girlfriends and stories about lesbians and stories about war, college, orgies and gang bangs.

As a graduate student, I taught undergraduates at the University of Pittsburgh from 2004 – 2006.  I had a definite teaching philosophy.  Looking back, there are a few things that I would have changed but I think my basic approach was the right one: keep it simple.

Even though I tried to get across the nuances of the “show don’t tell” technique of writing fiction I tried to do it in a straight forward, clear way.

So, if you write flash fiction or are thinking about trying to write flash fiction keep this in mind: A flash fiction story captures a significant moment in time.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Blogging On The 4th Of July 2009

Hello, my brother and sister writers, bloggers and Americans.  It’s a sunny morning here in Pittsburgh.  It’s around 11:00 am.  Some guy outside is using a mower to cut the grass.  Summer is definitely here.  I want to send out a special greeting to all my brother and sister veterans and of course the Old Soldier salutes my Vietnam War mates…

I still can’t get over Sarah Palin quitting in the middle of her term.  So many people had faith in her and I’m not even a Republican.  The Republicans are definitely in the wilderness…

Speaking of the wilderness, on this Independence Day we must not forget that the United States is hurting.  Millions of Americans are unemployed or underemployed and the numbers are getting worse.  The health insurance industry is doing its best to wreck any real health insurance reform and the economy is still on government life support…

Family and friends are certainly important on a day like today.  For those of us fortunate enough to be able to forget about our personal and national problems, let’s enjoy ourselves for at least one day…

For those of you who enjoy short fiction about love, sex, marriage, writing, friendship, girls kissing girls, girls gone wild, girls loving girls, sex videos, lesbians and just life in general go to the sidebar on the right under “Great Flash Fiction To Read” and do a random scan to find what you like.

Happy Fourth of July.
