Submissions: What Not To Send

My Ebook For Serious Flash Fiction Writers. The Link Is At The Top Of The Page.

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette publishes “unsolicited manuscripts.”  Wow, that’s a term I have not thought about since I was putting manuscripts into manila envelopes and dropping them in the mail box and getting them back with impersonal rejection notices over 15 years ago.

Here is what not to submit to the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette: stories about the supernatural, the weird or the fantastic.  And no science fiction.  Sorry.

Mainstream, literary and erotic flash fiction is always welcomed.  Here’s a hint.  If you send erotica, vulgarities and profanities kill the mood.

Oh, I would definitely like to see some good romance.

What is Compressionism?  It is the use of words to paint a picture that tells a story.

Flash Fiction: How To Get Published

One of the secrets of getting published is revision. Many aspiring writers think this means doing two or three drafts. They move around sentences or delete or add paragraphs; and then they hit the send button. This my friends is not revision. This is tinkering.

Revision is going over a story word by word and sentence by sentence while asking yourself, is this the right word in the right place? Is this the right spelling of the word? Is the sentence that the word is in clear? Is this the right punctuation for this sentence? Is this sentence in the right place in the paragraph? Is this paragraph in the right place in the story?

That my friends is revision. And the entire story must go through this kind of revision several times over a period of days or weeks or even months. Publishable flash fiction is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.

After talent and perseverance it is revision that separates the published from the unpublished.

Where To Submit

It’s a warm, sunny afternoon in Braddock, PA.  I’m sitting on the stoop in front of the Braddock Employment And Training Center where I’m taking Modern Office Systems Training at the Community College of Allegheny County.

I’ve come up with an idea.  Right now there are six publications in the sidebar of The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette that publishes flash fiction.  How about once a week I review one of the publications?  I know that at least two of the publications are paying markets and at least one nominates flash fiction writers that it publishes for the Pushcart Award.

Well, it’s an idea.  I think it’s a pretty good idea.
