Haiku: Summer Vacation

The hot summer wind

Blows through the empty campus

He feels young again

Hello, everyone!  It’s the Old Soldier here feeling nostalgic after a nice long walk earlier this afternoon through the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

The campus was like a ghost town.  Well, school is out for the summer and it is Saturday and it is the Memorial Day weekend.  And Memorial Day brings back memories, too, for the Old Soldier, of a nineteen-year-old kid on his way to the Vietnam War.

But that’s all behind me.  Now I’m retired and the editor/publisher of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.  And if you like my little blog, why don’t you click the follow button so that you won’t miss a single issue of the most dynamic flash fiction magazine on the Internet.

This Flash Fiction Writing Workshop Is Free

How’s everyone doing on this Memorial Day weekend?

The Old Soldier is doing great.  It’s warm and sunny in Pittsburgh and the blogging day has begun.  The Old Soldier is on duty and it’s not even 10:00 a.m. yet.  Retirement can make you lazy; but I’m not going to let that happen.  I’ve got a magazine to publish.

The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is a magazine published by a flash fiction writer for other flash fiction writers.

Because of the Internet, the popularity of flash fiction has exploded.  And the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is part of that explosion.  For a while there, online writing workshops were very popular.  Many of these workshops charged a fee; but you don’t need to pay a fee to learn how to write flash fiction.  You just have to be able to read.

Take a look at the sidebar on the right.  Not only will you find great examples of flash fiction but if you keep strolling down you will find dozens of articles on how to write flash fiction.

Then when you’re ready to submit your story for publication there is a submissions tab at the top of the page.  And this magazine is a paying market.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

So, what are you waiting for?  Send me something.  Oh, if you’re not a writer but you like entertaining reading, you’ll find plenty of that on this site.  And that’s free, too.

Welcome to everybody from all over the world.  Yesterday, the Old Soldier walked to the public library and he picked up some new reading material (to go along with his other library book about Andy Warhol): Spartans (A New History) and a new history of The Peloponnesian War.  A writer never stops learning.  The Old Soldier can find useful insights about being the editor/publisher of this magazine in everything he reads.

Blogging On Memorial Day 2009

I hope you’re enjoying your Memorial Day Weekend.  All Americans owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who fought and died for the nation.  As a Vietnam War veteran, I want to offer a special prayer of thanks to the fighting men and women who lost their lives in Vietnam.

Make the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette part of your reading routine.  For the writers in the audience the Gazette has added two new articles: Concrete Sense Details Make Fiction Seem Real and Newspaper Work and the Creative Writer.  There are plenty more articles on writing flash fiction and short stories under “More Flash Articles” in the sidebar on the right.

For readers who want to settle down with a novel the Gazette has a novel tab at the top of the page that reveals the secret on rekindling sexual passion in a marriage and an insider’s view on the student bar scene around the University of Pittsburgh.

Plus, there are flash fiction stories in the sidebar on the left under “Flash Fiction Stories by Guy Hogan” and more micro-fiction under “Great Flash Fiction Stories To Read” in the side bar on the right.

The Gazette also offers the closes thing to a free writing workshop that a writer will find on the Internet under the tab “Free Help For Writers” at the top of the page.  I’ve had over 40 flash fiction stories published in print and online publications.  If you’re an aspiring writer I think I can help you.  And if you’re looking for a place to showcase your fiction, read and follow the submission guidelines.

So, enjoy your holiday weekend and your visit to the Gazette.
