Writing: Work On Your Dialogue

Good morning, bloggers, writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics.  It’s the Old Soldier spreading the word about flash fiction.

The Old Soldier enjoyed another six-pack of beer last night.  The chili con carne is kickin’ and in the refrigerator and it’s a bright, chilly day in Pittsburgh, just right for blogging.

Even though flash fiction is very short, nothing brings a very short story to life like dialogue.  Dialogue must have some underlying tension and it must move the narrative efficiently to the resolution.

One of the best ways for a writer to learn how to write good dialogue is to read good dialogue.  You will find plenty of good dialogue in the short stories in the sidebar on the right under Great American Flash Fiction Stories To Read.

Writing: Your Home For Great Flash Fiction

The Old Soldier is blogging away.  Welcome to this humble blog, the home to some of the best flash fiction stories on the Internet.  You do know about flash fiction, don’t you?

Flash fiction is a very short story.  It can be from, oh, around 100 words to 1,000 words long; but just because it is so short does not mean that it cheats on anything that is in a regular-length short story.

A flash fiction story must still have a beginning, a middle and an end.  Or, as the Old Soldier likes to say, a setup, a buildup and a payoff.  It must also have narrative movement; which means the story cannot leave the reader at the start line.  The end line might only be one foot away but it still has to be there.  And the flash fiction story uses all the elements of description, characterization, dialogue and conflict that a regular-length story has.

If you want to experience what flash fiction can do, you have come to the right place.

Three Easy Steps To Writing Better Dialogue

Pepsi Wild Cherry

If you want your characters to seem real, you’ve got to write good dialogue.

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers, writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics.  The Old Soldier is going strong today.  That Pepsi Wild Cherry is good stuff.

Humm?  Maybe I should have my flash fiction characters drink more Pepsi than beer.  I’ve been told that I write too much about people who are nothing but a bunch of drunks.

Whatever.

Anyway, if you want to improve your writing of dialogue keep these three things in mind.

  • Dialogue should contain useful information for the reader that moves the narrative to its resolution
  • Dialogue should be a projection of each character’s agenda
  • There is a difference between spoken language and written language and dialogue is spoken language

I hope that helps
