Roethlisberger Accused Of Sexual Assault

Sports news flash: local media is reporting that NFL Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault.  The complaint was filed Friday in Washoe County in Nevada.  The complaint seeks more than $350,000 for lost wages, doctors bills and other damages.  The woman is in her early 30s and did not report the alleged assault to the local police at the time.  The alleged assault took place on July 11, 2008.  The woman claims that Roethlisberger allegedly forced her onto the bed in his hotel casino room and forced her to have sex with him.

Roethlisberger has denied everything and is reportedly ready to co-operate fully with any investigation.

This Is Why The Falcons Had To Release Vick

Michael Vick paid his debt to society.  So, why did the Falcons release him?  Some people might argue that he can still play pro-football.  He can still play quarterback in the NFL.  That you don’t keep a man who makes millions of dollars from making a living at what he does best and that is play football.  That he has learned his lesson and a strong message has been sent to others who might think of crossing the line between football hero and dog killer.

Vick may still play professional football somewhere, but if he does he will draw animal lovers and their allies to every stadium he plays in.  Yes, organized and not so organized protesters will hound Michael Vick until he just won’t be worth the bad publicity.

This is why the Falcons had to release him.

Steelers: Getting Harrison To Sign Is Tricky

The following excerpt is from an article by Ed Bouchette published in the 02/25/09 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The [Pittsburgh] Steelers and James Harrison want the same thing, to have the NFL defensive player of the year sign a long-term contract.  Negotiations have been cordial as the sides try to work out an extension beyond the 2009 season, the linebacker’s last under contract.

But more than the usual impediments to getting a deal completed are present–things such as the give-and-take of negotiations and salary-cap issues.  The new concern is one in which every contract across the league must pass muster–the fresh rules regarding the lack of a collective bargaining agreement beyond 2010…

Steelers Super Memories Caught On DVD

The following excerpt is from an article by Robert Dvorchak published in the 02/024/09 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

With a show business sense of preparation, NFL Films had outfitted Santonio Holmes with a micro-phone for the Super Bowl.

And as the Steelers were taking the field for their winning drive, Holmes could be heard telling quarterback Ben Roethlisberger: “I want the ball.”

That line played prominently in the premiere of Super Bowl XLIII Champions, which opened to an overflow crowd last night and is now available on DVD at various outlets.

Holmes and several teammates attended a special screening at the AMC Loews Waterfront before heading out to Best Buy in Bethel Park to autograph the first copies that went on sale.

“We’re going to have this moment to share for the rest of our lives,” Holmes said, who has been on a whirlwind tour of celebrity ever since his MVP catch lifted the Steelers to their sixth Super Bowl title…

Stark Gets Franchise Tag

The following is an excerpt from an article by Gerry Dulac published in the 02/20/2009 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Placing a non-exclusive franchise tag on tackle Max Starks was the first step in what will be an expensive offseason for the Steelers.  Signing linebacker James Harrison to a contract commensurate with his performance as the NFL’s defensive player of the year will be another.

The Steelers’ offseason got off to a pricey start yesterday when Starks, a backup right tackle who started the final 14 games at left tackle for injured Marvel Smith, was designated the team’s “franchise” player, a move that will keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent and pay him a salary of $8,451,000 in 2009–the average of the NFL’s top five offensive linemen…
