Flash Fiction Writers, Open The Eyes Of Your Readers

Woman As Art

Seeing is believing.  It’s true in life and it’s true in flash fiction.  The writer who can use words in such a way that his or her readers can vividly see what is going on in the story has an enviable talent for a special kind of writing.  That writing is known as “show don’t tell” writing.

How does “show don’t tell” writing work?

The writer uses a steady stream of specific, concrete visual details.  These can be actions or things that we can detect with our sense of sight.

In this way the reader actually “sees” the story on the little movie screen of his or her imagination.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

I never did make it to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh yesterday; but I have to go today to return a book that is due.  I don’t want to pay a penny for an over due book.  That money is better in my pocket than it is in the pocket of the public library.

Speaking of money, the Old Soldier watched the financial news yesterday on television.  I’ve always been working-class and now that I’m retired I’ve become a financial news junkie.  And for good reason.

The Euro zone is going to give the banking system of Spain a bailout; but the unemployment rate there is already around 24%.  In my humble opinion, no austerity program will work without some economic growth.  The United States faces the same challenge.

I recently got a letter from the Social Security Administration saying that the State of Pennsylvania was no longer going to help to pay my Medicare medical insurance.  The money will now come out of my Social Security.

Ouch!

No doubt a lot of other retirees in Pennsylvania got the same letter.  Now do you see why we all have to pay more attention to the news that affects our money?

International Banks Caught Manipulating Interest Rates

And now several major international banks are being investigated for illegally setting interest rates, making billions of dollars in profits for themselves while costing their customers billions of dollars in loses.

There are still plenty of reasons why middle-class and working-class people all over the world need the Occupy Movement.

Whatever Happened To The Occupy Movement?

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian

Live by the media; die by the media.  If Kim Kardashian couldn’t get the media to swarm over her there would be no Kim Kardashian.  That would make a lot of people happy.  And a lot of people would be happy if the Occupy Movement would just go away, too.  Well, the 1% would be happy.

But unlike Kim Kardashian, the movement can no longer depend on grabbing media attention by occupying property that belongs to other people in order to get its message out to the public.  Now the movement has to do the mundane work of community organizing.

Can the Occupy Movement get the 99% to vote for its own best interests?  Only time will tell.

Investing In The 99%

The Old Soldier is working-class and retired.  I have few funds to invest in the Occupy Movement; but I want to do my part.

I will be investing more time and a little of my discretionary funds in The Big Idea Bookstore and Cafe.  The store carries the only book that I have written.  The store is only about six blocks from my apartment building; and most importantly it is owned by the workers, the 99%.

Port Authority To Raise Basic Bus Fare

Here’s some local news.  On Sunday the basic fare to ride Port Authority, the public bus transportation system in Allegheny County, will go up to $2.50.  The  local mainstream media reports that only six other cities in the United States will then have a higher fare for public transportation than the City of Pittsburgh.

Frontline: Too-Big To Fail Banks Are Bigger Than Ever

Last night, the Old Soldier watched the second part of an investigation done by Frontline, the television news program, on Wall Street and the big banks that caused the recent great recession.

Very little has changed.  On Wall Street it is business as usual.

Oh, sure, the bankers agreed to a few restrictions; but nothing has really changed.  And neither major party, the Democratic or the Republican Party, have the will to reform the banking system.

The conclusion: it is only a matter of time before there is another banking crisis that will devastate Main Street again.

In the meantime, the Occupy Movement recently grabbed some media attention by holding demonstrations throughout the country in the past few days.

Hello, everyone.  The high will be around 80 degrees on a cloudy day in Pittsburgh today with the possibility of scattered thunder showers.  I hope you are all doing well.

The annual Pittsburgh Great Race will take place on Sunday May 6th.  Part of the race will go through Bloomfield, a 15-minute walk from my apartment.  Bloomfield makes the Pittsburgh Great Race a neighborhood festival.  The Old Soldier is thinking about attending the festivities.
