This blog got 1,191 hits yesterday from all over the world. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
It’s the Old Soldier here reporting from Pittsburgh.
Well, the American presidential election is over. President Obama gets another four years, the Republicans maintain control of the House and the Democrats maintain control of the Senate.
Will our government remain grid locked?
English: Number of self-identified Democrats vs. self-identified Republicans, per state, according to Gallup, January-June 2010 http://www.gallup.com/poll/141548/States-Competitive-Terms-Party-Identification.aspx. 18 point Democratic advantage 10-17 point Democratic advantage 3-9 point Democratic advantage 2 point Democratic advantage through 2 point Republican advantage 3-9 point Republican advantage 10-17 point Republican advantage 18+ point Republican advantage (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
But while our leaders try to figure out how to get things done, the Old Soldier is getting better and better at this editorial/publication business. I publish talented writers like Heather Kinnane (as of this posting she has three short stories on the front page and an interview) and I report on women like my niece Brianna Frost Hogan doing online adult videos.
Of course, that’s not all that’s in the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. Why don’t you see for yourself? Start with the front page. Find out why 1,191 people would read a little niche blog about flash fiction.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Paying Back Your Student Loans And Living In Poverty

The blogging day has begun. Good morning everyone! The Old Soldier continues to be in a good mood. And why not? Even though I’m poor and I’m 64, I have no pains and the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette got 139 visits yesterday. So, why wouldn’t I be in a good mood?
It’s around 11:00 AM and outside the sun is shinning and the Old Soldier is on duty. I would like to send a special shout out to the students at the University of Pittsburgh, my alma mater.
President Obama will be in the city today to talk up his jobs bill.
The Occupy Wall Street protest has spread to over 200 American cities. A lot of students are part of this movement. I can understand why. Many of them have their degrees and there really are no jobs for them. Of course, the present economy is no one administration’s fault. We as a society have been living beyond our means for some time. But when 3% of a society owns 97% of the wealth, that society is in big trouble.
The Old Soldier got his MFA in writing from Pitt in 2006; and if I had not taken early Social Security I would have lost my apartment. Today, I will be filling out papers for an economic hardship deferment request for my student loans.
Colleges and universities are turning out many more people with degrees than the economy can absorb or will be able to absorb for years to come. That means that for years to come millions will graduate with degrees but will live in poverty.
Sorry you had to hear it from me, but if the Old Soldier doesn’t give you some tough love, who will?
Just keep reading and keep writing that old flash fiction. And send me something. I’ll publish you.
