I get the impression that many writers trying the very short story for the first time approach it as a rant. As far as I can tell a rant is a shout out, something to grab attention; but a flash fiction story is a story with “characterization,” a “significant event” and “closure.” Very short stories have a “storyline” that moves at least from point A to point B.
Flash fiction is not about grabbing attention but about capturing a moment in time.

I Want To Publish Your Personal Experiences
This Is Some Of My Old Amateur Nude Photography
Hello, Pittsburgh! Hello, world! The Old Soldier is feeling pretty spry this morning. The Steelers won yesterday and the Occupy Wall Street Movement has spread to over 200 American cities, including Pittsburgh.
You can’t beat that with a stick!
The Old Soldier is in such a good mood that I’m going to call the Matriarch, me old 92-year-old mum, and tell her that I have decided to visit my brother who lives in an assisted living facility about a half an hour walk from my apartment. It’s a depressing place to visit. When I go there I have to control my feeling that the facility might keep me.
But enough about me. What about you? The new Anything Goes department here at the PFF Gazette allows readers and writers to publish their personal experiences right here on the most dynamic “flash fiction” magazine on the internet.
So rummage through your memory or put into words something that has recently happened to you and send it to me. Send me rants. Send me memoirs. Send me opinions. Tell me all about it. The Old Soldier is all ears.
Click on the Anything Goes tab at the top of the page, read and follow the guidelines and send me something.
