It’s Friday and you know what that means: karaoke tonight at Del’s Italian Restaurant in Bloomfield (Little Italy) in Pittsburgh. Karaoke is the social event of the week for the Old Soldier. I think I’ll start the evening off with Do You Really Want To Hurt Me by Culture Club.
I recently received a submission that was all exposition, had no conflict, no protagonist, no dialogue and no significant event. That’s not a short story. That’s not flash fiction. That’s an essay.
This blog has all kinds of good examples of what a flash fiction story is. Here you will find stories about lovers, husbands and wives, girlfriends and boyfriends and college students at the University of Pittsburgh. Characterization Is Key

Flash fiction is too short to be heavily plotted. Since a flash fiction story has room for only one significant event, character is more important than plot.
Hello, creative writers and my Flash Fiction Fanatics. I remember when I use to write regular length short stories, 2,000 to 4,000 words long. I would make an outline and plot out all the twists and turns. Then I got addicted to writing flash fiction and something interesting happened.
I didn’t have to outline my stories any longer. I just had to have an idea of how the story would end and I would write toward that ending. Plot went out the window.
I concentrate on the significant event and the ending. I feel liberated as a writer of flash fiction.
All I have to do is capture a significant event in the life of my protagonist.
Your flash fiction stories should be about character, not about the plot.
