Even though the Steelers lost, we must go on.  Hello, bloggers and writers.  I assume you are all eaters, too.  And there is nothing better than a steaming bowl of spaghetti; but we all know that it is the spaghetti sauce that makes the meal.

Now the Old Soldier has been on his own for a long time.  One of the most useful modern-day inventions for cooking is the crock pot.  One thing the crock pot is useful for is to cook spaghetti sauce.

Here’s one way to prepare your sauce.  Cut up whatever you want in the sauce.  I like green peppers and onions.  Throw the green peppers and onions in a frying pan along with some pieces of  ground beef and saute until the ground meat is brown.  Drain and add salt and pepper.  Put this in the crock pot along with your spaghetti sauce and let this slow cook until the sauce starts to bubble.

And there you have it.  Just pour over some hot pasta.  Cooking with a crock pot is a wonderful thing.

Hello, bloggers and writers.  It is less than one hour before the Super Bowl.  I am back from my beer run to Bloomfield.  I got the beer at Armand’s which has cheap beer prices and serves the biggest fish sandwich in Pittsburgh; but I did not get a fish sandwich.  I have plenty of food at home and ended up thawing out some spaghetti sauce I made over a week ago.

The sauce has peppers, onions and plenty of ground beef in it.  I heated it up and poured it over some hot rice.  The Old Soldier is fit and ready for a Steelers victory.

But this post is really about keeping your imagination productive.  There are all kinds of ways for a writer to feed his or her imagination.  A writer can just live life and keep his or her eyes open.

And a writer can read.  Start by reading some of the excellent content on this blog.  It won’t cost you a penny.

Looking Out My Apartment Window

Now that most of the leaves have fallen off the trees, I can see the Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh from one of the windows of my apartment.  That’s still one of my proudest accomplishments: getting my MFA in fiction writing from Pitt in 2006 at the age of 59.

Little did I know that I would find that blogging was my true calling.  I thought I was going to be the fiction editor for The Front.  Remember The Front?  I’d been offered the job just before graduation.  Then the publication went belly up.

But now  everything’s okay.  I got my own blog and everything is slammin’.

Be sure to check out the “Sexy Flash Fiction” tab at the top of the page.  I got to get back to my spaghetti sauce.  See you in a little while.

This is the Old Soldier reporting from Oakland in the heart of the City of Pittsburgh.
