Writer Know Thy Self

Why do you write?  What is your world view?  What are your major themes?  What is you main subject matter?  What is your style?

These are some of the questions a writer can explore to get answers that may provide a river of creativity.  The Old Soldier has asked himself these questions and this questioning process has made him a more self-aware artist who wants to continue to learn more about the craft of writing.

The answers to these questions can help a writer find what he or she truly wants to write about, why write about it and even how to write about it.  That’s huge.

Do You Know Why Most Creative Writers Fail?

Why do most writers fail?  Is it because of a lack of talent or poor writing skills?  Is it because of subject matter or style?

I’ll tell you why I think most writers fail.  It’s because of a lack of perseverance.  They simply don’t stick with it.  If you are a writer and you don’t make money right off the bat from your writing, get a real job and just keep writing.

And by keep writing, I don’t mean blindly turning out content year after year.  You must study writing the way you study biology.

If you are weak in grammar, fix it.  If you are weak in spelling, fix it.  If you use too many abstract words and not many concrete words, fix it.

And keep reading and keep writing.  If you truly accept that writing is a journey and not a destination, you’ll be okay.

There are plenty of articles on this blog full of useful tips to help you fix your writing, especially if you are writing flash fiction.

Writing: The Struggle For Originality

Every serious writer, no matter what level of skill he or she is at, must struggle for originality.  In this world of information overload, originality is nearly impossible to come by.

On one site that I write for, a majority of the writers simply repeat what is in the news.  There are thousands of blogs on the Internet that simply repeat what is in the media without the blogger adding a shred of anything new.

The serious flash fiction writer must struggle to bring something new to the genre, whether it is through writing technique, presentation of subject matter, style…something.

If you are a writer, keep this in mind.  Take a moment to read the submissions guidelines at the top of the page and then send me something.
