Writing: Getting Through The Bad Times

A writer is going to go through some bad times as sure as a boxer is going to get hit.

Hello, my brother and sister bloggers, readers and writers.  All writers go through bad times.  And a lot of the bad times have nothing to do with writing.  But of course everything that happens in the life of a writer impacts his or her writing.

So, in my opinion, the most important trait that a writer can have is the ability to simply keep writing.  I know that’s a pretty simplistic philosophy, but if you are serious about writing, what is not writing going to get you?

Keep reading and writing that flash fiction.

3 Steps To Successful Writing

Each writer has his or her own definition of what success looks like.  Needless to say, every writer will not make a living at writing.  There are different reasons for this.  The majority of writers don’t have enough time to invest in their writing to make a living at it because they are busy making a living at something else.

Success for a writer who makes a living doing something besides writing might be the publication of a short story in a small but respected journal of fiction.  Success might be doing a guest post on an influential blog.  One of the highlights of my writing career was winning a fellowship to attend the graduate writing program at the University of Pittsburgh in 2003.

There are all kinds of levels of success for a writer; but it seems that most writers of any level of success owe their success to three basic things.

  1. Perseverance
  2. Reading good writing
  3. The ability and the determination to learn how to write better

Many unsuccessful writers simply give up on writing because it takes too long to learn how to write well.  Many unsuccessful writers may write a lot but they don’t read a lot; and by read a lot I mean read those writers who are respected as writers.  Finally, many unsuccessful writers will not learn proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and the proper us of words.  They figure if they can write an email they know how to write.  It is one thing for a writer to make use of something in an improper way to get a certain effect and to know that it is being used improperly.  It is something else when a writer does something that is improper through ignorance.  A good number of readers will catch the writer’s ignorance.

There are no guarantees in life; but most successful writers will follow the same basic three steps to writing success.
